Looking for a remote-control release (without cable) for my D200. Should go up to at least 50 feet. Thanks.

I can lend you my son. He can throw a rock 50 feet or more when you ask him to. That's as close to remote control as I can tell you right now.

He is on a bus. He will be at your home tomorrow.

Did I mention he suffers from ADD and severe anger out bursts with extreme violence?

Remove all sharp objects from your house immediately.

But he is a really good and accurate rock thower. I hope you can run and dodge really good!

P.S. When he is not taking his medication, he gets really bad.

P.S.S. No returns. We are moving out of country with no forwarding address!

That's the only Nikon supplied option I can see. Unfortunately the OP specified an operational distance of at least 50ft and the ML-3 specs say 26ft.

I would say he'll need to go with a radio transmitter.

$165+tax+shipping... that is such a CHEEEAAAP solution for wireless shutter release! :)

I'm sticking with my 20sec timer... is that enough to run 50 ft?

The ML-3 is a great gadget that I use regularly - fits standard 10pin socket (front left of D200 but needs an MBD100 grip for D100).

10metres is a good working distance for this if you want to trigger the device yourself in bright daylight but the unit can also be set up to trigger itself (if an object cuts the IR beam) so depending on what you are shooting (i.e. a moving object) and if you can setup the IR ahead of time in the right place then 50feet is possible, as is 500feet come to that but around these parts if you leave your gear unattended at that distance it is likely to get nicked :-)

A timer will not provide the same functionality as a true remote release. How do you know if the subject will be in position at 20 sec, 10 sec, 5 sec, etc? Try shooting macro or wildlife with a set timer and see what happens.

As others have said, 50 feet is probably too far for an IR based remote release. You will probably need a radio cable release.

There is a chinese company called Adidt that makes wired and wireless releases that are supposed to work fairly well. I think the model you want is the "R3" (Nikon version). I did a little searching on google and couldn't find one for Nikon however.

You could also go with a pair of Pocket Wizard Plus units with a "Motor drive cable" although this is a very pricey option.

I think there's another third party company that makes radio remote releases for Nikon, but can't remember the name off the top of my head.

I found one on ebay with radio control goes up to 300feet, but he can't ship till januar. So guess I gotta wait and keep using the series timer on my d200.

Thanks guys!
