>>> Challenge 74: Character Studies <<<

It's these two images that are missing:

Note that they are both currently registered on what appears to be server "k43" while the other images have landed on other servers. Someone should probably mail Pbase and ask them to reboot k43...or reset some databse or whatever they do to solve the problem. It happens fairly often, whatever it is.

The "medium" size versions are viewable btw.

I thought I saw a post about a CTF challenge on fog, etc. Did I just imagine it? Was it an old thread? A search doesn't produce any positive results.

Victor, there was a "CTF Mini Challenge #112 - Misty Photos" in June posted in the CTF thread. Here's the link:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=18820648

And there is a current "CTF MiniChallenge #91 Mists and Fog" Posted in the 300D/350D forum:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1031&message=19506991

I don't know why there are 2 challenges called "CTF Mini Challenges" in the two different forums though.

Thank you. Well, that explains why I didn't find it looking in this forum, but it doesn't explain why I couldn't find it using an all forum search. Oh, well. I figured someone here had to know about it. Thanks again.

...to Najinsky's #2 over in Exhibiition.

Kids do love their water, don't they?

Nice image by both of you.

Best Wishes,

Yes, its very similar. The venue at "Uncle Wilbur's" has an identical circle of fountains. What you see in my pic is a mushroom shaped center piece to the circular fountain ring which has water flowing over it to create a 'waterfall' look. Thanks for the look and the comment, Trav.

Sorry bout the change of subject but after seeing your post to the challenge I had to ask you about the lens you used. Great shot!! I have a copy and it has never been great. I thought it was just me, as yet to be determined. Now Canon has a recall on it so i was wondering if you have had yours serviced? It looks great!!

Thanks for the comment, David. To answer your question, no servicing. I bought it about two months ago, tested it thoroughly in both portrait and landscape modes, and found it equally sharp in both. I used a dollar bill tacked to a post and couldn't find even a slight difference. I'm very happy with this lens. The pic in the Challenge Gallery is a 100% crop, as well, without any sharpening. It was shot in landscape mode, however ":^)

It was very nice of Kiki2 to provide this list. I haven't gone through the galleries yet looking for oversized images, but I assure you that when I do they will move to pending if they are on this list. It really takes energy and time to provide these lists, so please take care of these oversize images and cross them off the list with a post here.

Appreciated,

Michael

I knew the original was oversized too - just forgot to upload the optimised version after starting with the original so the EXIF got loaded.

Michael, Kiki,

Isn't it a little extreme to move pictures just because they are a tiny bit over the limit? I actually downsized mine to around 135-140k in photoshop as was previously suggest before posting, but as I've been told photoshop is not accurate. Do I have to go back and play around again just to reach the golden 150? I understand the need for the guidelines to assure equal quality, but does 2 or 3K make that much difference in quality?

I'm not running the show here and I agree that a petty two KB isn't much to rant aboiut...but I guess the line has to be drawn somewhere. If "some" bending is allowed - then how much? When is it too much? etc.

Since it's so easy to make an image fit in below the limit anyway, why not just play by the book?

By using the "export for web" feature in Photoshop, you see the image size in KB, quite detailed, as you drag the "compression" slider back and forth.

Also note:

An image that has already been uploaded to Pbase can be replaced . This way you don't loose its existing comments, title etc, and you avoid the somewhat heavy compression Pbase does if you choose their "recompress" feature.

To replace an image instead, with another copy saved locally (preferrably below the filesize limit..)
  • View the previous version while logged in as cslr_challenge,
  • click link "Edit this image",
  • at the bottom of the next page you'll see the upload box for the "Replace image" feature.
Hope this made sense.
