Why I returned the S2 and kept the Pro1

great post, bberg.

My thoguht is the S2 is a better deal than the Pro1 simply because
it is more versatile, and it compliments a DSLR better down the
road. The Pro 1 wants to be a DSLR, but really isn't, whereas the
S2 is it's own "thing".
you only have to look at Sue Anne's Pro 1 pictures to see that the S2 is not even into competition to a Pro 1 even with all its "bells & whistles" .. not even by a long shot although it is probably a nice cam in its class .. :-)

That's kind of my point. The S2 is so versatile, uses AA's, does great movies, that you can enjoy the heck out of it for a year and then pick up a D70 for dirt cheap, which would crush the pro 1. Ahhh peanut butter and jelly ;)

.. hmm dirt cheap is a bit relative ..

In Europe the price situation is appox. as follows (based on the lowest price available through "price tweakers website")

Pro 1 = 700Eu = 840 USD
D70 kit = 780 Eu = 936 USD
Canon Xt kit = same as D70
S2 = 465Eu = 558 USD (but a lot of shops have it at 500Eu = 600 USD)

These prices are claimed as being the lowest in the Eu zone .. so one may have to travel a lot of Km or find out if they accept mail orders to get such low price ..
So choices are not all to difficult to make :-)

I was able to get the Pro1 for $600USD which I considered to be an amazing deal for this cam. I'm sure the S2 will be dropping into the $300 range by the end of the year down here so I may pick one up at that time.

I've always wondered why people like the AA's - I know you can buy them anywhere (and don't forget they do cost money, and should be consider in the cost of the camera) , but isn't it eaiser with rechargeables? To each his own I guess.

I know the batteries in my camera last a long time. Although I have two spare's, I hardly use the one I have, and when I've been on a 1 or 2 day break taking over 300+ pictures with LOTS of playback - in other words using it the way I use it works ok for me - YMMV

my .02 - well maybe .002 :-))

I didn't know you could do that? WA40x :-))

There is an external canon flash available for the S2. Page 159 of manual. Model HF-DC1. No bounce option unfortunately. Merely adds flash reach. Likely not as good an option as an actual flash shoe but it is available.
No personal experience with this item.

The problem with this product is that it's specific to the S2. If they went to all the trouble to include this capability, Canon simply should have included a standard hot shoe.

They say the same for my Nikon SB30 flash. But who says you have to mount it on the bracket or, in the case of the Nikon flash, on the hotshoe! Like the HFDC1, the SB30 (can also) work as a slave flash. So I mount it on a tripod (with a $10.00 adapter) or hold it in my hands towards the ceiling and, wallah, I have a bounce flash.

Note: When the SB 30 is used in conjunction with the Nikon camera, I can shut off the internal flash. I can use the SB 30 with the S2; can't shut off the internal flash so it still goes off, but it does greatly improve things.

Get creative.

If the Pro1 costs $840 in Europe, why can't you order it from a US supplier for about $550?

I'm not sure why more people don't. Other than the obvious fact that some people only want to buy from a reputable company. I bought mine at a local retailers (Good Guys) and consider $599 a good deal considering I didn't have to order online.

Weeks of agonizing over Pro1 and S2 has finally ended. I too returned my $350 S2, and ordered the $499 Pro1. I hope I won't be disappointed.

What filter(s) would you recommend, does it make sense or is it even possible to get extended warranty on the camera following the order ?

Except that next year an S3 will come out with more features and you'll buy that one and you'll never buy the D70.

S2 is an expensive toy. If you just want snapshots and a lot of fun, S2 is for you. If you seriously want to take high quality photos, get a dSLR or a serious digicam (pro1, G6, etc.)

Agree. If you can find an S2, it is probably around $400 or more. For $99 more, the Pro1 can't be beat (IMHO).

I think you made the right choice.

I myself just got an S1 for $215, will return my S2 and buy a Rebel XT.

Boy, almost everywhere I turn, you're really after this camera, aren't you?

I do NOT consider the S2 a toy at all (It's my 7th digital camera; 8th if you consider I tried the FZ5 and returned it). To me the S2 is/can be a serious digital camera, just as is my Nikon 5400. In the right hands, you certainly can take more than snapshots with the S2!!!

You can, of course, take just snapshots with a dSLR too. However, I do believe that the highest quality images are best obtained with a dSLR...but there is a cost, both in money and weight, for those who go that route.

Thanks! Thought about getting the Rebel 350D but I could not see myself lugging it around at family events. Good luck to you as well with the S1, XT.

Thank you all.

I am exteremly happy with my Pro1 decision although it isn't the perfect camera (no camera out there is).

It's definitely slower than the S2 in functionality but I am willing to give that up for the difference in picture quality.

In my digital camera experience, I have found that the higher up you go in price, the larger the percentage of "amazing" pictures you will get out of the camera. Of course, some of this depends on the photographer so of course some people will have a higher percentage of great pictures depending on which camera they are using.

In my experience on here, there are a larger percentage of "great" pictures coming from the Pro1 than from the S2. I had an S1 before I got the Pro1 and I am definiately getting a much higher percentage of "awesome" shots with the Pro1 then could ever be obtained with my older cams.

Take care,
