When you start adding a better lens to the Canon, you can narrow the price gap and bring the Rebel upto the price of the D70.quality differences between the two cameras narrow when the Drebel
is fitted with a better lens.
Looking at the pics especially page 22 the canon out resolves the d70. This is going against everthing you said about the D70 being sharper etc. Also do not forget that the canon has one more ISO stop. They are both good cameras but I am glad that i have the rebel and not the d70. HIs pics in the review confirm this for me....Moire is rare and when it does occur it tends to be unobtrusive.
I noticed that the things I noticed, Phil also saw.
One thing he didn't go into (unless I missed as I scanned) the
Nikon kit lens seems to "beat" that of the Canon. The image
quality differences between the two cameras narrow when the Drebel
is fitted with a better lens.

I see your schwartz is as big as mine.
In the comparison tests he used 50mm 1.4 lenses on both cameras - so there should be no difference there. Interestingly although Phil notes higher resolution of the D70, his final resolution numbers (table) for the D70 are actually slightly worse (same vert/horiz, lower extinction). Also the noise level in the sky in the outdoor test is higher from the D70, and the 300D was not set to its lowest ISO. Overall I'd say the image quality is fine with both cameras, no major advantage to either....Moire is rare and when it does occur it tends to be unobtrusive.

This puzzled me too - 300D crops on this page look at least as sharp and in some areas sharper than those from the D70, yet Phil writes about this sample: "I would say that the D70 is slightly sharper and is resolving slightly more detail". By the way, I wish Phil would use batteries with English rather than Japanese text in this scene, so we (Japanese-challenged) can compare the legibility of the fine printLooking at the pics especially page 22 the canon out resolves the

One thing I found interesting is how Nikon's software actually has a place in the Nikon workflow. Pretty amazing!!Just reading through the review of the Canon's competition...
Agreed. Both cameras are highly recommended, and the known tradeoffs can be considered by prospective purchasers. Both are excellent cameras, and hopefully we have a win-win situation - D70 owners feel vindicated, and 300D owners won't have to wonder whether Stan can take good pictures, as he'll hopefully quickly sell his Rebel and permanently move to the D70 forum.Interestingly although Phil
