Competition is good for all of us. The marketplace forces the manafactures to offer more to the consumers. Thus we win. Maybe canon will respond by making an official firmware release with more features? I think minolta did this a year ago.

Very interesting. Considering the Moiré problems, Phil likes it better than the 300D. I'm a little surprised.

No doubt about it. If the D70 had been available when I bought my DigiRebel over 6 months ago, I would have given it very serious consideration.

D70 owners still keep saying how moire only shows up in 2 out of 100 pics or something like that, well that is some BS. If you go look at the full resolution blow ups of Phil's shots, a majority of the outside shots have moire in them. I am actually surprised that Phil spoke so highly of a camera that has a flaw as prevalent as this. I shoot 90% outside on sunny days, and I cannot take the time to open each shot and try to reduce the moire. The Nikon does have some nice features, but so will Canon's answer and with Canon's sensor, I won't have to worry about moire. In the meantime, I am enjoying my Rebel and collecting some nice Canon glass.

...Moire is rare and when it does occur it tends to be unobtrusive. I noticed that the things I noticed, Phil also saw.

One thing he didn't go into (unless I missed as I scanned) the Nikon kit lens seems to "beat" that of the Canon. The image quality differences between the two cameras narrow when the Drebel is fitted with a better lens.

When you start adding a better lens to the Canon, you can narrow the price gap and bring the Rebel upto the price of the D70.

Looking at the pics especially page 22 the canon out resolves the d70. This is going against everthing you said about the D70 being sharper etc. Also do not forget that the canon has one more ISO stop. They are both good cameras but I am glad that i have the rebel and not the d70. HIs pics in the review confirm this for me.

I agree.

It's great to have another excellent camera at this price point.

Of course, i'm "stuck" with Canon as I've already purchased 2 lenses and am on the hunt for a Bigma.

BTW - I thought Phil's review was outstanding!

If only Nikon had come out with the D70 six months ago, Canon may have put out a DSRL at that price range even earlier than they did....but that's neither here nor there. Now Nikon owners get to benefit from a decent, inexpensive DSLR.

It's good that we (300D owners) are not in such an exclusive club anymore, as Canon is probably deep into their next 300D and 10D revisions (although now that I have a 300D, I think I will try to squeeze 2-3 years out of a digital camera).

If we didn't have Nikon, Pentax, Fuji, Olympus, etc. DSLRs would probably still cost $5000+ and come with 3MP.

In the comparison tests he used 50mm 1.4 lenses on both cameras - so there should be no difference there. Interestingly although Phil notes higher resolution of the D70, his final resolution numbers (table) for the D70 are actually slightly worse (same vert/horiz, lower extinction). Also the noise level in the sky in the outdoor test is higher from the D70, and the 300D was not set to its lowest ISO. Overall I'd say the image quality is fine with both cameras, no major advantage to either.

This puzzled me too - 300D crops on this page look at least as sharp and in some areas sharper than those from the D70, yet Phil writes about this sample: "I would say that the D70 is slightly sharper and is resolving slightly more detail". By the way, I wish Phil would use batteries with English rather than Japanese text in this scene, so we (Japanese-challenged) can compare the legibility of the fine print :)

..of shooting and reviewing many hundreds of shots from the Drebel and from the D70. The D70 is a sharpie all right. Especially kit to kit. It's one of the first things you notice in a batch of PICs. Maybe Phil's samples will give a better view of this situation.

one behind the lens. Dont worry about the D70, take your Rebels out and have some fun. Compare shots, not gear. It aint the gear that takes the photo.

Congrats to nikon for a great camera, the same to Canon.

One thing I found interesting is how Nikon's software actually has a place in the Nikon workflow. Pretty amazing!!

The dReb and D70 both did a great job on the studio comparisons. I remember how my old Olympus digicam scored in these comparisons; you could see the basic shape of things in the comparison scenes. With these dSLRs you can see amazing levels of detail! Jpeg, in studio, at low ISO the dReb kills the D70; at higher ISO and outdoors ( both in jpeg ) they're more or less even, and with both cameras set to RAW the Nikon pulls ahead. In a lot of cases the D70 shows a little bit more detail, and in others the dReb did a better job, or hold detail that the '70 lost to moire and other artifacting. All in all, they both do a great job, and they're pretty much neck and neck. It's pretty amazing how far digital photography has come, and what you can get now for less than $1,000 USD.

I think the D70 is great news, in that competition is ultimately good for everybody.

Agreed. Both cameras are highly recommended, and the known tradeoffs can be considered by prospective purchasers. Both are excellent cameras, and hopefully we have a win-win situation - D70 owners feel vindicated, and 300D owners won't have to wonder whether Stan can take good pictures, as he'll hopefully quickly sell his Rebel and permanently move to the D70 forum.

We can now learn more about upskilling and firmware hacks to use our camera to it's fullest ability. Those that reach that point will probably want to go to the next level ( with much longer grovelling to bank manager required! ), and not move sideways unless they want to change their system completely.
