Hi all, I'm just feeling a bit depressed that i paid £3500 for a 1D six months ago. Would have waited if i'd known about the MKII.

I know i've had fun, but still, what a bummer.

Can any body say anything to cheer me up?

Cheer up! You have a very capable camera! Have you run into anything that you wanted to do with it that you were unable to do yet? If not, stop agonizing over it and enjoy the machine you have! When you run into a brick wall and can't do something you need to, then you should feel badly about it. Unless you do a lot of night photography, I bet this won't happen!

Sadly photo librarys wont take 1d images (sniff). And i do use it for late evening sports shoots, argh - grain overload...

There are people asking to buy a 1D all the time. If it's that new, sell it! you could get close to what you paid for it and then buy the MK II.

when you take a look at your loss, divide it by 6 months and get an idea of what you paid to rent the 1d and learn it prior to owning a real camera (chuckle - I am waiting for the MKII too). I just bought a 10D as backup to my MKII and I expect it will be discontinued any day now since I keep hearing a Simpson character voice saying "Ha haaa!" over and over....

But my one-year-old 1D still amazes me every time I use it...and I paid $3600 and it was only a few months later that they dropped $500...and even more before it was discontinued...

4.1 MPs are plenty enough for me and the buffer is plenty enough for me and the 1D's 8 fps are still enough for me (half-a-frame more a second w/1DMII? Give me a break!)...

I'd love to have a second 1D (got a 10D) as a back up...can't really afford a used one...not to think of the more $$$ for the MII...enjoy what you've got...it's still one of the most incredible picture-taking machines ever made!

I relish mine!

Yeah, in the US they are going for $2700-$3000, sometimes
a little more, in excellent to like new on eBay. It is mysterious
because the US new price is about $2800 now, although the
supply of new 1D Mk 1s is very very limited at the moment.
(They're out there somewhere though.) You might be able
to get somewhat more for it in GB.

3500 quid, ouch.

If it's any consolation, I hear that the dark noise of the Mk II
isn't that great compared to the 10D/300D.

You've got what is one of, if not the best cameras in the world. Maybe you could have got a better one for a bit more money six months later, but don't let that detract from what you've got.

I bought my 1D a month ago and I don't regret it for a second. I still look at it sometimes and think wow, I've got a 1D !!

Just enjoy owning and using your fantastic camera and don't worry about the next-big-thing which isn't even available yet. And remember that the main advantage of the 1D Mk II is the increased resolution, plus a few other improvements to features that are already good on the 1D. We're not talking about a huge leap forward, we're talking about refinements.

I paid £2000 for the D60 and got £850 for it from my brother, OK, I do this for a living and it had seen some use but still quite heavy depreciation.. I'd either sell the Mk1 while there is a serious demand and the Mk2 quoted price is high (you may even get £2500) or just keep it and run it into the ground..

Whatever - you have one hell of a camera which is WORTH the £3500 you paid in quality and the output it gives..

Yes, I for one believe the 1D is one hell of a camera.

Were you stuck on the 4mp resolution? Many have shown here it can produce quite stunning large prints. The general theory on that is the weak anti-alias filter makes the images sharper out of camera. USM on a camera with a strong anti-alias filter does almost the same. But the 1D competes respectably with 6mp cameras.

Enough said. If you don't believe that, so what. But your reply to Adam was offensive. You should tone it down here.

And for what it's worth, I don't have a dog in this fight. I've sold my 1D and have a mkII on order.

... the 1D is still the best buy by a long way already.

It has a higher flash synch and sharper imagery than the MK11. For it’s class the 1D is still arguably even more desirable than the MK11.

The 1D is still a hell of a camera and will be for years. I too sold my 1D and am waiting for a MK II next month. I printed an 8 1/2 X 11 picture from my 1D last night that has more resolution and detail that I could ever wring out of my 10D by a large margin. I almost think I made a mistake by selling it and going to the MK II, but wanted the cleaner high ISO performance of the MK II, certainly not the extra pixels.

Its the quality of the pixels, not the quantity.

different people will find different advantages. The thing I am looking forward to is the change to the ETTL-II. For wedding photography I expect/hope this will make things much easier and from the feedback from Stephen E. and the Pope, it appears this will be the case. Double the mp ain't too shabby either.

Set the Way Back machine to March of 2000.

Canon has two DSLRs. The D2000 and the D6000. Both are based on the EOS-1N 35mm body. The D30 is not yet announced, so you cannot consider it.

The D2000 is a 2 MP iso 200-1600 camera with a 1.5x FLM and sells for $15,000 US.

The D6000 is a 6 MP iso 80-200 camera with a 1.3x FLM and sells for $25,000 US.

Set the Way Back machine to today.

If you go to sell either on eBay, you'll recover $500-1000 US for the D2000 and $1000-1500 US for the D6000.

If you go to sell that 1D on eBay, you'll recover $2000-$2500 US.

Plus, the 1D is a much better camera than either the D2000 or D6000 (and I know, having both a 1D and a D6000 myself).

There. Feel any better now?

Yep, i agree, it's a very sexy tool. But I miss not having a zoom function that I had even on my old D30.

I bought my 1D a month ago and I don't regret it for a second. I
still look at it sometimes and think wow, I've got a 1D !!

Oh, don' t get me wrong it's still a loverly camera, but the MKII is twice the resolution which would have been accepted by the photo librarys. I could have at least made a few quid back then.

Ahhhh! I think that hit the spot, now that did make me feel a bit better, thanks for that.

Just in passing what dpi did you have to print at for that size, or did you upsample?
