I just trade my Olympus C4040 to buy this new camera (Digital Rebel). I always dream about a digital SLR, but more than U$1500 is too much for my use (home and fun). When I heard about this camera, I thought: The camera I always been waiting for.

Well, I preparing to order one of those when I realize this forum with so much information about it. I Started to read 4 hours ago and now, I'm in a quite dilema. All those threads about soft imagens and post processing!

I wanted a SLR b/c of it's lens options. I always think that my 4.1MP Olympus gave me goods pictures. With a SLR I could have far more fun. Well, happens that I want all the SLR power but I don't want to spend time post processing. I don't even want to apply a sharp filter. I used to shot 200 pictures in a weekend. Can you imagine post processing 200 pictures a week? No thanks.

My question is: Can I, tweaking this camera settings, get images similar from P&S (that I was very satisfied for my purposes)? If not, there are any other SLR that I can get this processing in camera? I don't bother about get the best, I want the power of SLR acessories but with pictures (bad for pros or not) right of the camera.

Ps: Sorry about my english, I barelly speak portuguese that haapens to be my native language.

Set the sharpening to high, and you should get close.

If you have Photoshop, you can buy or write "actions" that will automatically go through your images and apply appropriate sharpening. It's not a big deal, really.

Even for 200 a weekend.

Extrapolation from few solid data points is best left to those with years of training and experience in such things.

HI Joao,

Don't worry about what you've read. Get the camera and let your own judgements decide. I think for the most part, the images straight from the camera are very good. I don't think you'll need a lot of post-processing to get good images.

My guess is that youa're going to be very happy with this camera.

What you're going through is called cognitive dissonance. Also known as "buyer's remorse". You buy it, you regret it, you decide you did the right thing by it. I do it all the time. Luckily for me my wife didn't too much when we got married! LOL

It's just human psychology. One interesting aspect is that the people most likely to research a product are those who have just bought it!

It's simple. I just edit my pics, put them in a folder, open up Photoshop, and run an automated batch processing of all the images in the folder. You just hit play and walk away. It'll do all sharpening (or whatever you want it to do) at the specific level you desired, just the way you wanted it, automatically while you go off and do something else.

I hate post-processing, too. That's why I try to get it spot on in the camera, then all I have to do is batch sharpen.

At least, interesting your thoughts.

But the problem is not that I already bought the camera, I willing to buy. So, if I could figure out anything that coud me bother in the future, better stop now and look for another options. I really like the idea of DSLR, but I really want right of the camera pictures.

I came from a Dimage 7i and I love the photo's right out of the 300D. I think they are sharp enough at parameter 1.

Does Joao Roberto have Photoshop? I know that Adobe Elements 2 comes with the DRebel which is better than any other packaged software I've received with a digital camera, but will Elements 2 do a batch process?

Yep! I used to play around with Photoshop 7.0. My only concern is that I don't want have to. With my old camera, I used to take tons of shots just for fun. Right off the camera with a very good looking without have to deal with post process.

I just got worried b/c so many people in this forum complains about been to much soft right off the camera. But reading for a while, I figure out that may this is not so bad. I saw lot of good shoots, without PP that looks great. Check this out:

The best to do I think is wait for the camera and judge by myself. Looks like a very subjective point. Maybe I will be so happy with this camera, since I'm changing from Oly C4040 to EOS300D, that this will be a minor annoyance.

Petteri, I much as I enjoy your pontification, you really should put the workflow link in your sig. I know you can get there from pontification - but some newbies might not know what your pontification is all about and miss the "meat & potatoes". I try to refer them there when possible. You did a lot of work and this forum can benefit from it maybe the most! - m²

batching actions should do what you need with minimal work on your part--except for 'special' images perhaps.

B/W lover, but color is seducing me

João,

I live in Brasil too. I tested a D60 from a friend and tought the pictures were pretty good directly out of the camera. Shutter lag and speed was also a major impact (I had a S100 and a G3 at that time).

For what it´s worth this is my shopping list for the Digital Rebel:

1 CANON EOS DIGITAL REBEL w/EF-S 18-55mm KIT 999.95
1 CANON 50mm f/1.8 II EF LENS 64.95
2 CANON 52mm HAZE UV-1 FILTER 21.90
1 TIFFEN 52-58mm STEP-UP RING 7.95
1 CANON 80-200 f/4.5-5.6 EF II LENS 99.95
1 TIFFEN 58mm PHOTO ESSENTIALS (INTRO) KIT 57.84
1 LEXAR COMPACT FLASH 16X-USB - 512MB w/WA 144.95
1 LOWEPRO LOWEPRO MINI TREKKER BAG GREEN 69.00
1 CANON ES-62 LENS HOOD w/HD ADAPT 62 21.95
1 CANON ET-54 LENS HOOD 19.95
1 CANON EW-60C LENS HOOD 21.95
1 CANON SPEEDLITE 420EX 159.95
1 STO-FEN OM-EX OMNI-BOUNCE f/CANON 420-EX 16.95
1 TIFFEN 58mm CLOSE-UP SET (+1/+2/+4) 45.90
1 CANON L3 NECK STRAP 19.95

From my point of view it covers pretty much everything I need and I´ll only need new things if the pictures start to look really cool and the lenses start to limit what I´m doing (or the flash or the filters).

I bought this all at once because of all the customs and shipping problems we usually have. B&H have a very good reputation around here in São Paulo.

I already have an extra battery, a 256 card and an external reader. What I think I forgot was:

Remote Control - but this will only come when I get a tripod.
Eyecup extender because I wear glasses.

My 2 cents (oops a few dollars I think).

Keeping S100, Bye G3, welcome Digital Rebel!

A few of you are sharpening...why? Are the pics that soft? Doesn't
sharpening introduce artifacting?
Applying unsharp mask (USM) is a natural and essential part of DSLR photography for optimizing and finishing the image. I have my 10D set to apply the least amount of sharpening in-camera so that I can do it externally through Photoshop with my desired USM settings. For portraits, for example, I prefer a mild level and specific of sharpening to maintain a film-like look. Sharpening externally gives you the most control of your image.

Beautiful picture Peter. Who is the subject? Looks like a model!

If you want something quick and cheap that will batch process all your pics, then I found PhotoCleaner http://www.photocleaner.com was an excellent purchase.

Also corrects colour problems, white balance, resizes, sharpens, adds borders and creates a web page all with just one click.

It might not be too everyones tastes but for quick and dirty it does more than a good job for most cases.

Here's an example of before and after shots of mine (these were taken with Fuji S602, but you should get similar results from 300D)

This will fix about 90% of your pics and you can then go in and tweak the settings slightly for those that don't
