Sony A9 can't do 20fps with many lenses

Just saw this on the Sony site. Many lenses can only handle 15 fps with the A9.

Not that 15 fps is bad, but most of my lenses can't do 20 fps which I didn't realize until now.

That's as of now, they might be able to update the firmware on some of the other lenses to make them compatible as well.

The list seems to be newer lenses (many of which are high end).

Lol, that's funny! The sel50m28 seems slow I might try it in burst mode on the a7rii and a6000 just for fun.
I'm guessing the sel55210 will be able to do more than 15 fps on the A9, with removed rear baffle it's a viable cheap light option when one doesn't want to carry the fe 70-200 lenses. I use the sel55210 with my a7x cameras at times uncropped in FF mode.

Edit: I see now that they also listed specificly that sel55210 will max do 15fps while tracking in af-c, wonder what testing will show.

The 50mm F1.8 has no focus problems at all in AF-C. It's only in AF-S that its slow. Much the same with the 50mm F2.8 macro, unless you trying to focus from normal ranges into macro ranges, in which it will take a long time because it doesn't have the Ring drive like the 90mm macro does.

Missing are the FExxZ lenses (FE1635Z, FE2470Z, FE35Z/2.8, FE35Z/1.4, FE55Z).

Also missing are the slower lenses (FE2870, FE24240, FE70300).

Notably absent is the FE28.

Now, what about all the Batis' lenses?

I think it just shows how significant this jump in speed is and how forward thinking Sony's approach seems to be.

Some think that glass is glass but often forget that there are mechanisms that have to operate in conjunction with the camera and it appears that 20 fps exceed a lot of that functionality in even some of the newest lenses.

The list seems to be newer lenses (many of which are high end).

Yes, pretty much everything released in the past 12-18mths is in the list of 20fps compatible lenses.

And there are 12 in that list as of now, which is not too bad for a start. Especially assuming that more will be added over time.

All of my few AF lenses (already purchased and planned) support it. I don't like the Batis lenses and it proofs that the Loxia lens line has the better value of the Carl Zeiss portfolio.

In case you need AF on a Alpha body Sony seems the best option.

I don't know whether I will ever buy a camera that supports 20 fps though - renting is a different story.

What lenses do you have?

My usual trio is the FE28, FE55Z, and B85. I recently picked up a FE50 macro (which oddly is supported) and I have an FE2870 when I need a zoom. Have been considering either the FE1536Z or FE70200 f4. The GM 2.8 seem great but I'm not sure the price, size, and weight are worth it for me. Will be renting the 70-200GM and may change my mind but I tend to rent the 70-200 for gigs anyway.

How does the list of 20FPS lenses stack up against the list of lenses that close down to focus? I wonder if that's the limitation? Just speculation but I know that my standard trio will open up to ~f/2 to focus while the 85GM will stay stopped down.

Those lenses are the only ones that support continuous AF and AE at the 20 FPS rate. It has to do with how their AF motors work and how their aperture mechanisms work.

If you don't mind AF and AE locked on the first frame, I'm pretty sure any lens will support 20 FPS.

I suspect it has more to do with how the aperture control is implemented. Some of the supported lenses, in particular the 85GM and 50 Macro, are not fast focusing lenses.

Sony need to convert their A mount tele prime such as the SAL 300 f2.8 G II and the SAL 500 f4 G to E mount and to provide this 20fps to help people justify to buy A9, hopefully can reduce their prices too!

Now the longest tele lens is the up-coming FE 100-400 lens and to use SEL20TC to reach 800mm at f11 which is slow!

I found I do not have any of the lenses listed in the table that can do the 20 fps! However, when I looked at the "Focus Mode: AF-S/DMF/MF" it seems when using these modes, all lenses can achieve 20 fps, so I tried using AF-S and MF mode when shooting with the MB4 + 2X + EF 600 f4 II, but the shutter noise seems to be no difference compare the at AF-C. I wonder it may still be only 15 fps at even MF for using adapted lenses. Perhaps someone like Jim Kasson can help measure if 20 fps can be achieve when using adapted lenses at MF !

FYI, I have been using the 128 GB Lexar 2000X SD card which has speed of 300 MB/s on slot 1, so the card can handle the highest speed of writing in.
