I am about to buy my wife a point and shot digital camera. I would like to get some oppinions of what you guys are using in addition to your D100, d1x and d1h. I am using a D100.

I've always liked the Coolpix swivels, and have owned a 950, 990 and now a 4500. The previous two are still seeing active use in the hands of friends.

It's nice sometimes to slip that into a pocket rather than to lug the D100 around with a big lens on it.

I have the cp5700,and love it.the 8x zoom is sharp as a tack ! ...frank d

My "toy camera" is the Olympus 520z. I leave it in my car so that I can always take a shot when I run into something interesting.

It takes great pictures, superb auto white balance (much better than my D1x) and the lens has a slide door which protects it from rough use. I love it! I think it's selling now for around $220

Whilst for 35mm/digital SLR I strictly stick to the Nikon system, I must say the Canon G5 is very tempting right now as a point and shoot to have along.

The Sony F707. A bit big, but 5 MP resolution, great Carl-Zeiss lens, and A, S, and M modes. Nice menu system as well.

Just took it with me last week when I hiked up to Half-Dome. Used a camera strap that held it to my chest. Saw something I wanted to shoot, lifted it up, shot, and continued walking, and walking, and walking....

Great natural colors.

The 5050 has a fast 1.8 lens if you like doing available light stuff.

If I had to do it again, I'd opt for a Canon Digital Elph because the things are just so small.

CP 5000; slim design fits easily into a pocket or bag and 28 mm
equiv. lens is wider than any other small digicam. A huge advantage
for a walk around camera in my opinion. Add the 19 mm lens and you
get the best wide angle in the business.

Nice and small with 2 mpix...Nikon 2100 is what I bought my wife to use....it takes fairly decent pics....

-I have bought for my wife PENTAX OPTIO S-.The camera is small and she keeps it in her purse all the time. Excelent images incredibly convinient. My wife was fed up carrying around D100 with 70-200 VR unobtrusively.

Used Nikon for 35 years, but for p&s the new C* n Ixus (elph?) 4mp is small and very nicely built, and picture quality is fine - I can get A3+ prints from it that are very usable.

I only wish Nikon would produce something that small with a 28mm equivalent to replace my much loved AF600 35mm compact.

I just stepped up to the D100 from the Nikon CP 5000. This camera is an amazing little camera and can do quite a bit.

It's going to remain in my bag for a while to come.

I love the D1 X but I recently bought a Canon s 45 for an overseas trip. I shot mainly with the D1 X, but it is not a good "Happy Snapper".

The little Canon (fits into your jeans pocket) was great for so many pics on the run.

The built in flash was very acurate and the canmera has full manual control if required.

Travelling overseas with a 5 year old son......sometimes it is nice to just point and shoot.
Cheers

I own two Canon Elph (Ixus outside the US) p&s cameras: S100 and S200. Both fantastic and about the size of a cigarette packet. Extremely robust. You'll carry it everywhere, which means you'll take more photos.

Cheers,

Mathew

My brother and father just recently bought a small $50 digital camera. They have been having so much fun with it because they take it everywhere. My brother doesn't like it though, because there is no room for creativity...all totally automatic. So, he's been looking into more expensive, smaller digital cameras. (He currently has a Nikon film camera and lenses.)

Their fun prompted me to think about a small digital also. After talking with my brother about it, he said he would go with the D100 and just put a 50 mm lens on it. You have an excellent camera with one of the best lenses, and a flash to boot, that can be point and shoot or more options if you want.

I already have the D100 and 50mm lens, so thought I'd give it a try. I couldn't give up the battery grip though because I love doing the audio messaging with it. I bought a small camera case and started carrying it everywhere. It works great! It may seem inconvenient for a man who is not used to carrying a purse, but for a woman, it is like nothing :-) Unless you'll both be using your cameras at the same time, it might be a very inexpensive way for your wife to get a top of the line camera.

I've tried - I've REALLY tried
Olympus 3030 (sold it)
Olympus e100 (not enough pixels [good though]
Canon G2 (horrible colour- especially blues)

Nikon CP 5700 (disgusting EVF viewfinder, and I always drifted off to sleep when it was focusing).

At the moment I'm considering a CP5400 - please stop me someone!

kind regards
