That is beautiful! So, you are not only shooting nice girls, are you?
What is you opinion about this lens?
Personally, I really like this lens a lot. Even if it's not the sharpest you
can get, the tremendous versatility (24-120 range, VR, AFS)
is irresistable.
But I would really like to hear a professional's opinion about it.

Hi Vtie, thanks, how's it going? So far I've been shooting at F8, F11, and F16 and I'm really impressed with the lens at these apertures, at least it's better than I thought it would be. However at F5.6 it starts to soften, but I'm going to try shooting at F5.6 tomorrow comparing it with my 28-105. I didn't stay outside very long today as it was 105 degrees.

I like this lens and may have to keep it at F8 or above to get the sharper shots, but with the VR function it's easy to do just that in lower light situations.

As far as the girls go, well, there were a couple next door swimming in the pool but I don't think they'll let me post photos of them on the web :-(

Take care, Dennis D

Nice shot Dennis. I just got mine too, but have had a busy work week and not opportunity to take anything other than test shots (not worthy of posting). And I don't have the experience needed to do a 'real' test. But my experience so far has been the same as yours in that keeping it stopped down results in pretty decent shots.

I think if people set their expectations and use according to the design point of the lens, they won't be disappointed. Can't expect it to be the 28-70 (or 45P, 60 Micro, 85, etc.).

My expectations of this lens were low with some of the negative posting I had seen, but I was very impressed with it at F8 to F16 (the main apertures I've shot with it so far). I'm going to test it against my 28-105 at the wide open apertures to see how they compare in this respect.

Instead of making more VR lenses... I'd like to see a VR Body....!!!

That would be great! I wonder if it's at all possible.

Imagine shooting with the 85 1.4 with VR capabilities set to 1600 iso. You could shoot in almost no light and nail it :-).

Yup, a VR body would be a great idea. I just got this lens a couple of days ago. It's my first VR experience, and it's pretty amazing.

I do wish that there was an indicator in the viewfinder to remind me whether VR is turned on or off. Would also be nice if it was listed in the EXIF data. Oh well.

I've been leaving the VR on all the time, the only time that I'll turn it off is when I use a tripod. Still it would be nice for the info to be included in the EXIF data.

How do you like the lens so far?

Dennis,

I like the lens fine. Only got it a couple of days ago and haven't done a whole lot of shooting with it yet, but so far it's pretty much what I expected. Actually, I only got my D100 a couple of weeks ago, so I'm still getting used to it. I've been shooting professionally for 25 years with film cameras and this is my first DSLR.

I would guess that getting the VR info into the viewfinder and EXIF data would require a firmware upgrade, since VR is more recent than the camera, but I could be wrong.

I went through a period of VR obsession when I got my 80-400. Every day was a contest to see if I could go lower still in shutterspeed. My results suggest that there's a "mess with your head" chip in the VR lenses that lets you get the shot at 1/ridiculous-fraction-of-a-second when it doesn't really matter, and then actually shakes the lens innards when you really need the shot. Keep track of your hit rate; it's harder to zero in on than without VR.

That shot looks pretty sharp to me! Some people have said that this lens is soft at wide open and at the longest focal range. Your shot is done at both settings 120mm and F5.6 and still looks pretty sharp.

I'm going to test my 24-120vr against my 28-105 for sharpness because I thinking of using the 24-120vr in it's place at wedding receptions. Your shot at F5.6 gives me hope especially since I'm shooting people.
