in upcoming Canon SLRs? After going from a D30 to a 10D, I don't think I can deal with anything higher than 6mp. And honestly, I think 6 may be a bit overkill.

I dont really care about being able to cut and crop afterward as I aim to do most of my composition thru the viewfinder.. These giant files are slow to work with and huge in size.

I see the future just bringing higher and higher resolutions.. Many are predicting 8mp for the next camera.. What am I gonna do with 8mp.. 10.. 15.. 20 MP in consumer cams by 2005? I think 4-6 MP is the sweet spot. Cant see the use of anything higher (ok maybe for pros and magazines, etc.. before you flame)..

Hi Joe,

I went from a D30 to the D60 to the 1D. People thought I was crazy taking a step back in mp. But I shoot 95% Sports and Auto Action. So I needed the AF and speed of the 1D more than the mp. Plus I like the 1.3x better than the 1.6x of the D30/D60/10D.

So for me...the 1D is just what I need. 4.1mp is enough for me to print up to 20x30. Eventhough I have only printed 13x19. And I was totally impressed. So was the parents of the athlete that I photographed.

So, I don't think I would jump...even if the next camera was a 1D with 8-11mp. Like you said the files are huge. The D60 files were huge...I can't even imaging a 11mp.

Well, that is my 2 cents worth.

Yes, for most work, 11mp is enough. But most of my stuff goes into print and is printed with ink at 300dpi. On web presses, no less.

I think as newer final imaging platforms emerge, there will be reasons for bigger files. But for now, BETTER files is the target.

3072 x 2048 gives you 12 x 8.5 print with no upsizing. Will still look nice 2x upsized. I don't know of any monitors, which go above 3072 x 2048. What else do you need? I'm happy (until they come up with twice the resolution for the same price).

This will squeeze just about everything out of the top lenses.

13.333 X 20 @ 300 DPI.
Uprez to 20 X 30 and still have 200 DPI.

I think 24MP will do it for me.

...for what I do. Give me more dynamic range, higher ISOs and less noise. I don't need more pixels.

IMO, the only benefit would be the ability to do nice tiny crops that still retain monster megapixels. I'm not willing to fit only 27 shots on a CDR however, that's getting ridiculous.

At some point in the future, you may regret that you don't have a particular photo you like very much at 25MP.

You can print an impressive 13x19" at 150dpi with 6MP.

You can print a stunning 26x38" at the same 150dpi with 25MP.

In just 10 years, a 25MP file will be tiny compared to common hard drives. It will be loaded/processed in a fraction of a second.

I want each and every pixel up to the physical limit imposed by lens aberrations and diffraction. Beyond 100MP in 35mm format, the magapixel race will stop making sense.

6 MP seems plenty to me. What I would like to see most...

1) I'd most want to see continued improvement with regards to high ISO options with less digital noise.

2) I'd like to see Canon get eTTL flash exposure to work properly

3) I'd like to see a Canon with a dust protector (perhaps as Sigma tried to do), or perhaps a low end Canon with a fixed half silvered reflex mirror (as in the Olympus E-10/20, which also translates into a sealed dustless CMOS area.

4) I'd like to see improvements in the user interface.

5) I'd like to see an optical finder that has a small split prism or microprism in it for when you want to manual focus or to manually confirm focus.

All of these computer upgrades have to be to be afforded!

Photography is already expensive, adding frequent PC upgrades is just getting too expensive!

I say give us better files, IE... better anti allaising, better colour, better Dynamic range, better noise control (although this already becoming very good. And affordable full frame, i think a 6Mp full frame would be absolutely perfect, just manageable file sizes on a modest PC with the possibility of very large print outs.

That would be equivalent to a 4000 dpi scan of a 35mm negative, BTW.
So long as it's no where near as noisy / Grainy at ISO100 (ASA100) as even Provia is on a 4000 DPI Scan that would be fine, otherwise we may as well stil have 6.5Mp but spread across a full frame sensor :)
