Adobe GREED!!!

I just came up against a stunning example of Adobe's apparently boundless greed.

I have been a loyal Photoshop owner since approximately version 3 (I honestly don't remember - but the oldest CD-ROM disk I have in my library is a Photoshop 7 upgrade disk).

Several years ago I upgraded to the Design Standard Suite, and have upgraded repeatedly to CS4. However, I rarely use anything other than Photoshop.

I have now learned (the VERY hard way) that Adobe will not allow me to buy the upgrade version of Photoshop CS5. If you own a suite, you can only upgrade the entire suite, with my minimum cost being $499.00!!!

Well, I just ceased to be an Adobe supporter, and may very possibly become a bootleg software user, because I think Adobe is simply being GREEDY beyond reason!

I bought an upgrade that I can't use. MAYBE Adobe will refund my money, but in any case, I won't be a legal user of Photoshop CS5.

It's funny that you say that..... because i'm in the exact same situation. I have CS3 Design Premium but just wanted to upgrade to Photoshop CS5. I called up Adobe and found out that upgrading doesn't work that way :-(

I feel your pain....but hopefully they will allow this in the future.

Whilst you're free to criticise Adobe - the forum posting rules clearly state....
  • Software piracy - We do not allow the posting of serial numbers, cracks, warez links or anything related to the piracy of software ."
..advocating the use of bootleg/illegal is against the forum/site rules.

I have Design Standard CS4 and upgraded to Photoshop CS5 (purchased it through Amazon). The install program required the CS5 access code and then the code for a previous version of Photoshop (which comes with the CS4 suite discs). The "Full/Upgrade" option menu (on the Adobe website for Photoshop) only asks which previous Photoshop version you have (not whether it was part of a suite). Something fishy about the response from Adobe sales. If that is their new policy that is truly unfortunate.

The Adobe upgrade policy has always been the same, AFAIK. As a long-time user, this is the first you heard of it? Have you tried posting over on the Adobe support forums? http://forums.adobe.com/index.jspa

How long have you been using the suites? If it is only the last couple of versions - you may be able to upgrade an older single-user version (e.g. CS3) to the newest. In any case - you are more likely to get a definitive answer, directly on the Adobe forums.

Nice of you to raise the rules of forum Mark but if you do a search you will find this topic has been discussed many times and threads have not been removed.

By stating that I would not be a LEGAL user of Photoshop CS5, I did NOT state that I WOULD use pirated software. You may infer that I MIGHT use pirated software, or that I won't use Photoshop CS5 at all. But in NO CASE did I advocate software piracy nor state that I would engage in software piracy.

So, I haven't broken any laws or even any forum rules! (You sanctimonious...)

So he says !!!

So what?
-He might quit using Adobe products (looking after alternative solution)
-He might keep using CS4 ('cos he refuses to be legal CS5 user)
-He might just rant (we do that from time to time)
-etc...

I think these quotes are rather a give-away:

You're quite welcome.

If this or any previous thread starts, or deviates, to suggest the use of bootleg or illegal software then it breaks the forum posting rules.

The rules are there for a reason and it's quite reasonable for anyone to bring them to the attention of others.

It's entirely up to the forum moderators what action to take - if ever it were to come to their attention.

Your previous words...

No one has accused you of breaking any laws.

But you are flouting the forum rule(s)...
  • Software piracy - We do not allow..... or anything related to the piracy of software ."
........(You sanctimonious...)
  • Flame / Attacks - We do not tolerate abusive , malicious, personal attacks or self-promoting messages.
  • Be civil - anyone being abusive, calling names or generally trying to stir up trouble will not be tolerated. If you think someone is wrong it may be because they are new, don't jump on them, think first. If you are repeatedly abusive you will be banned from these forums.
Politely reminding other forum members of the rules is a perfectly reasonable, and responsible, thing to do.

You have been politely 'reminded'.

The bad thing is they refuse to let you trade in your entire suite just for the single program that you use! That is ridiculous IMO, especially since they only stocked suites at campus stores for most programs and the way they priced it led many into getting suites without any need or use at all.

Anyway, I simply ended up upgrading nothing, so they got $0 instead of $199. I guess they prefer $0.

I got the design standard suite at one point solely for InDesign (they didn't stock that alone and the suite was within dollars of the same price) but now they want $499+ for an upgrade and refuse to let me trade in the suite license for a single program InDesign license. Even the adobe customer service agent I spoke to said it was pretty awful but that management so far has not listened to staff.

I don't know how you got it to work. I tried it and it said INVALID!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you are trying to upgrade a suite to a single item.

Well, at least we know there are no lawyers here. Ahh, you're good. If Adobe brought an action I'm sure the judge would toss it out as soon as he saw this brilliant legal reasoning. Clarence Darrow...move over!

A couple of years ago I bought a Wacom tablet that came with Photoshop Elements and was able to get the upgrade to CS for 199. You might want to take a look at the Wacom site and see what their current upgrade promotions are.

Take a look at the new Elements 9. All plug-ins seem to work, and it's $79 or perhaps, less at some discounters, very reasonable when packaged with the video editor. PS is expensive unless there is a tool (new ones in 9) that you can't live without. Works great for me, but the Organizer is annoying because I don't want to "organize" everything according to its rules.
