Hi,

My first post in the new Sigma SLR forum. Yeah! :)

Very good sources for infos about Sigma lenses are:
http://www.photodo.com
http://www.photozone.de

From my own experiences (in conjunction with D60) i can definately recommand :

-Sigma 50-500

-Sigma 70-200/2.8 APO (This lens delivers Canon L lens quality much less expensive).

The Sigma TC 1.4 also would be a nice add on

Regards,

Andreas

And this is my first post in the new STF... whoops! I think that might be confusing. I guess we'll be calling it the SLF instead?

I just wanted to thank you for the recommendation for the site about lenses. This will be an excellent page to study.

Hahahahah... I think the "P" part has already begun for Sigma, but it isn't MY fault. :-)

I am seriously considering it. I need to finish some projects first that will require my finances. But once those projects are done, I'm considering what I will do next.

I hope it won't become another SPF !

So you will order a SD9?

For an idea of the lowdown on the great, the good, the bad and the downright ugly regarding lenses..

Some Sigmas really shine but be aware of their serious QC problems and severe sample variation.. I tried three 17-35s and all had different faults including one where the AF motor packed up altogether! - and a 28-70 EX which actually performed worse than the cheapo £80 28-70!!..

We're all hoping that Sigma will hire a QC department now that they have a DSLR on the market and we'll all benefit from that -- I'd LOVE a good copy of the 15-30EX (as I've seen VERY good samples from it) but haven't the time or the patience to line a dozen up along a shop counter to find one which works well and I doubt the dealer has too...

This SD9 COULD do all of us a LOT of good, I hope they sell loads of them, make a fortune and step up QC :)))

Someone pointed out this site to me recently:

http://www.photozone.de/2Equipment/easytxt.htm

Here is my shopping list at this time (subject to change):

Sigma AF 2.8 14mm EX (worried about this one due to the low review rating)
Sigma AF 3.5-4.5 15-30mm EX DG (if I decide against the above lens)
Sigma AF 2.8 24-70mm EX DF DG
Sigma AF 2.8 70-200mm EX (HSM) (supposed to be a very good lens)
Sigma AF 1.8 28mm EX (equivalent to the 50mm w/ multiplier)
Sigma AF 2.8 50mm Macro EX (hoping that Sigma will introduce an f1.4 version)

The first buy should be the Sigma AF 2.8 50mm Macro EX

This is a GREAT lens

Well here is my potential buying lens (ranked per buying priority):
Sigma AF 1.8 28mm EX (equivalent to the 50mm w/ multiplier)
Sigma AF 2.8 50mm Macro EX (hoping that Sigma will introduce an f1.4 version)

Sigma AF 2.8 14mm EX (worried about this one due to the low review rating, but I have seen some excellent pictures from this lens)
Sigma AF 2.8 70-200mm EX (HSM) (supposed to be a very good lens)

I will buy the S-9 film camera to go along with this.

The only issue I am really concerned about is the grip. I have pianist's fingers (thin long fingers). Most small grips cramp my hand. I can not take pictures with a camera with a crappy grip. Unfortunately most reviews do not cover the issue of how the grip feels to people with different type of hands. Most Japanese products seem to be designed for people with small hands, so I am concerned about this. I have never been able to get my hands on a Sigma camera to check this out.
The first buy should be the Sigma AF 2.8 50mm Macro EX

This is a GREAT lens

I gather your main gripe with the D60 was that the autofocus was not up to the demands of photographing birds with long lenses. I wonder how the autofocus on the SD9 will fair.

Hi Arthur,

A reasonable guy you are! :). To be honest, i fear the SD9 won't perform
better than the D30/60 in this field. (Of course i can be wrong here)

In the moment i am just amazed by the output of the Foveon chip in terms
of picture quality...

Andreas

Phil responded to a poster in the news discussion that asked about autofocus. His response was "pretty good". That's encouraging!

Hi Leah,
Phil responded to a poster in the news discussion that asked about

It seems all his comments (so far) in aspect of the SD9 are positive. That is a good sign.
But, so far i remember, he never critized the AF of the D30/60.
For sure it is not bad, but in some situations it doesn't work very good :)

Here's a list of good ones:

24 F2.8 (3.30)
50 EX F2.8 macro (4.65)
105 EX F2.8 macro (4.42)
180 EX APO F3.5 macro (4.30)
28-70 EX DF F2.8 (3.50) tested sharper than the 24-70 EX (3.32)
15-30 EX DG F3.5-4.5 (3.54)
70-200 EX APO HSM F2.8 (4.02)
50-500 EX APO F4-6.3 AndreasP has some great shots with this
100-300 EX HSM F4.0 (4.18)

Don't know about the wide end, I'll have to do a search in the Canon SLR forum.

Also, Ritz has listed a "new" 70-210 EX APO HSM F2.8. I asked about it and the manager said this came in with the listing for the new flash units? go to http://www.ritzcamera.com and do a search for this catalog # 253093165.

I've had the SD9 on order from Canoga since March. I hope the SD9 doesn't turn out like the supply of the D60 did for them!

My list would be:
28-70/2.8 ($300) -> 48-120/2.8
70-200/2.8 ($700) -> 120-340/2.8
20/1.8 ($360) -> 35/1.8
14/2.8 ($800) -> 24/2.8
1.4x ($150)
28/2.8 -> 48/2.8
50/2.8 -> 85/2.8
...
...
or, may be a
28-300/3.5-6.3 ($250) -> 48-510/3.5-6.3
for fooling around...

See, to collect these set of lenses will cost me several years. For Canon, i may need to spend my whole life...

Here's a comment from Phil's review of the D60 on it's AF capabilities...

"One area I think a lot of people expected to be improved is auto focus, and this may be the D60's only achilles heel."

They will not have to worry about Canon L-lenses!

Owning a Canon SLR, there is always this urge to buy L-glass. One dare not admit they own a cheap 75-300 non-USM, or a Sigma 28-300 for their D30/D60 because they will be looked down upon. Sigma SD9 owners will not have to worry about this because all that they will be able to use is Sigma lenses! They will be all one happy Sigma family :)

I have one L-lens for my D30, a 70-200 f/4L and it is the most incredible lens compared to anything else I have used, but now it would bother me to buy anything non-L because I know what it is like. But if I had a Sigma SLR, then this would not bother me in the least because the option is simply not there! I have some extra cash, that I know I should use to pay down on the Visa, but I am lookin at a Canon 28-70 f/2.8L... not that I need one in the least bit, I could buy a Sigma f/2.8 28-70 for 1/3 the price too but it just wouldn't be the same. I have a Canon 28-135 IS USM that serves me fine for that focal-length. I just think I need this lens and it is bugging me!

Maybe I should trade in my Canon setup and get a SD9 with a few inexpensive Sigma lenses and move on and worry about other things haha!

No problem.

It seems like Sigma would try and use the AF from the SA 9. Anyone have any experience with the SA 9?

Cory, thanks for this reference. Well, i think we still shouldn't
expect an outperformer in this field...

I have the following on my Canon 20D and am very happy with each. All I need now is a 1.4 TC, 100-300 2.8 and a faster wide angle lens:

Sigma 28-80mm Macro 3.5-5.6 Aspherical
Sigma 80-200mm 3.5-5.6 Ashpherical
Sigma 50mm 1.4
Sigma 70-200 HSM APO EX 2.8
