Absolutely no control over lighting, subject matter, location or anything to do with creating the image other than being there and missing the show because the photographer was busy looking at a little LCD rather than the action.

In the end is it of any interest to anyone except the person who took it because it stirs up memories that no one that wasn't there has?

Is it video-making? NO Does it show camera knowledge? NO Does it demonstrate good photography? NO

So why is it posted?

What is happening to STF that talent-less, skill-less, creative-less junk like this is showing up?

you're dealing with a generation that believes the interweb
and really believe you can buy credibility.
It's the world you left them, just quietly, they don't know any better.
Can't blame them for a little on-line paranoia.

It brings up the bigger questions though:

Does video belong on a consumer level P&S ?
Yes, live with it.
Will video quality become part of the buying choices.
Of course.
Will Sony cater for this?
You think?
Will STF cope with an influx of video to the detriment of still ?
Probably not. Someone will suggest starting another forum.
I'lll even start the ball -
The All Comers P&S Still Forum. NO SLR'S.
(STF stills won't fill it and we could use the competion,
be good to go head to head with the Panny and Oly brigade
and Sigma upstarts!)

One smaller question:
if the OP wanted a cam for ONLY concerts,
why did he buy a P&S instead of the proper tool ?

Finally, it's Sony's fault we crusties haven't moved on from
R1s, H-series, 828 etc, because they haven't produced the goods.
The reason for that is they make their decisions based on sound
business principles and we don't rate.

Now how about you grab the H-tool and post the video
of the twighlight wheelchair races at Ebenezer ?

LOL I guess there's a liitle adjustment needed! Apparently those clothes they're wearing were 'designer made' and that 'dancing' was created by a choreographer, and apparently the whole thing is 'entertainment' that lots of young people line up to pay for!

No point trying to offer constructive criticism to a generation that is largely centered around rebellion IMO.

Calm down Grumpy, to think I was looking forward to buying my HX1 and coming to the friendly Sony side to talk, why go looking for this stuff if you have nothing better to do than slag it or are you just over exited after watching, now go and take a chill pill ( :

By the way it was not my cup of tea (well) but my little girl likes watching and dancing around so she is happy and that is all that matters.

Unfortunately like it or not this is the way of the current world, for every one person who wants a proper still camera there is 1000 who want every darn bell and wistle you can stuff into a body. And I hate to admit it but one of the reason I was drawn to the HX1 is it appears to have it all, 20 x zoom, hd video, numerous different and unique programs. It is the old SUV theory, is it as good as a car NO is it as good as a truck NO will we buy millions and millions of them YES. So it goes, create what the masses will buy.

My wife and I have a Keith Urban concert coming up in a couple weeks. We're 4th row floor level. Went out and bought my wife the TX1 for this reason. They don't allow large cameras in concerts (I'd prefer to bring my 50D) so the TX1 it is. HD video and all. So why not. Same deal with this video you posted I'm sure. Small, compact, and you're allowed to bring in. Also, what's "STF"? And why even bother ranting about that video? I don't get it...

edit - I just looked up what an HX1 was. I'm surprised they were allowed to bring that one in. It's still fairly large from the looks of it.

You are probably right but this is today's tendency which is the result of the unbearable easiness of digital photography, that have created a whole new generations of camera operators that spend most of their time to test cameras and very little if at all ti learn something about photography.
So why is it posted?
Because YouTube is a public place and anyone can publish there anything he wants.

Well, you'll be surprised how many times talent-less, skill-less, creative-less junk was already showing up here in STF, even by honorable members who pretended to be great masters... and it is probably going to be worse so you better get used to it. Maybe changing the definition of photography would help?

Yea thats what I though also. The HX1 is going to be a tough one to sneak past the guards. Will be good for outdoor festival type concerts but try hiding that at a tight security show.

Yes the video was posted to YouTube, but the post was directed to from STF. It was referred to as an example of GOOD video that the person wondered why they couldn't achieve the alleged quality.

And yes lousy photos are posted by honorable members who pretended to be great masters. I assume this slam was aimed directly at me. I have never claimed to be a master much less a great one. Yes I have posted some awful photos. But I believe that I have over the last few years shown that I am seriously trying to improve and doing things I never thought of doing when I had my studio. And that is what most people here have been doing is trying to improve.

After all it is a far cry from this.

To this.

I don't as a rule look at materials pointed to on STF. Having read several posts about video which I will probably never shoot. I decided to see what they were talking about. By the way it is perhaps two and a half months since I watched any TV. Did not up grade to digital and don't miss a thing.

Ah the hell with it after over 20,000 posts over three + years perhaps it is time to admit there is nothing left here to really interest me. And do as I have been advised. Find another outlet. But I would miss the STF family.

There hasn't been a new camera for a couple of years worth talking about much less purchasing. And the cameras I have were hashed over years ago. New gizmos but no quality left in the output

A camera with all these gizmos is sort of like a Jack-of-all-trades. Can do a lot of things haphazardly but nothing really well. As is well known the camera manufacturers keep stuffing more and more itty, bitty pixels onto a itty, bitty chip and wonder why image quality is plummeting.

Bah, humbug

I'm sorry Marion, I have missed out this point. Now things are more clear to me. I agree that this video clip as a whole is cr@p but, if you are able to ignore the cr@ppy aspects and concentrate only in the technical features rendered by the camera, it does represent in a way, what the camera can do in terms of HD video.

NO no Marion. Now you are the one who got it all wrong. I wasn't at all referring to you with the above "compliments" If you need to know, it was AAK I was referring to and lets not elaborate the subject because there is a book I can write about.

Marion, coming from the same school as you with some 45 years of photography experience, let me tell you that I think you are a great photographer. I always admired your photography, especially your older works and always took you as a true artist. Some of your photos are so stunning, that I wish I'd taken them myself. I also enjoy very much your digital photography. I think you are a person with endless curiosity and always find new and fresh ideas for photography project. I like very much your digital approach and even though some photos aren't perfect, I always prefer an imperfect photo that tells a story over a perfect one that leaves me cold.

I hope this answers your worries :-)

Cheers
