Haven't got a 5d MkII yet (hopefully soon as on order) but what is the a goodd card to buy, is it a Sandisk Extreme III. I have tried to search forums but with no real success I'm coming from a old but good 20D so I guess I wil need to upgrade the CF cards I have for that.
Thanks
Dave

I have the UDMA Extreme IV 16Gb, no problems whatsoever, just wish it was 32GB :-)

Canon quote that UDMA is required for max burst rates etc....Extreme III will work yet you may be slightly limited. Search this forum for 'CF'...Note that Canon used to bundle their camera's with Sandisk, some re-badged 'Canon'.

Faster will always be better when it comes to emptying buffer. If you need the longest continuous burst the camera can deliver at max FPS, you need a UDMA card.

For video and regular shooting, Extreme III is just fine. I have a 4GB IV and 16GB III and for the toying around I've been doing I can't say I've noticed any difference between the two at all.

Edit: Oh wait, you specified video . In that case, no reason what so ever to go higher than Extreme III. It has like three times the required write speed for full resolution video (think the video specifies 8MB/s required while the III does 30MB/s).

Thanks to all, just have to sit back and wait for camera now :-)

transcend 32GB 133x was my choice, fast enough to handle video without a problem and cheap enough that I could buy 3 for the cost of one 16gb extreme IV.

UDMA is not needed for video.

I have two of these, and they work very well. Or, ok, I'm still on my first card, but I've have 16 GB Transcends for my 5D for a while and they work fine. In my three years I have once filled my 5D buffer, so I never saw the need to buy faster cards. If I was heavier on continuous shooting, I might think differently.

Right. Any modern card can manage the 38 Mbit/s video stream from the 5D2. After all, 38 Mbit/s is less than 5 MB/s, which is an ancient speed for a CF card.

-Depending on your volume.

If you're filling up cards regularly (daily/hourly) then a fast card & reader would be a wise investment.

I have extreme III and IV cards and even with a fast reader there's at least a 2x longer wait to empty the III cards.

I sometimes dump my cards to disk twice a day. I need more/faster cards soon.
