Error 02 on 10D - How to Repair

I have an EOS 10D and it started giving me an error code 02. From what I could find it was a memory card read error. I contacted Canon support and tried various things with my memory card (and tried another, formatting, etc.) and was told to send the camera in for repair. I did, and the estimate has come back at $300.

I have a few questions which it'd be cool to have some input on:

1. Is this camera worth repairing? I mean would I be better getting an new digital SLR body and putting the $300 towards that? How does it hold up to currently available offerings?

2. I was using Lexar memory (512mb CF card). Should I get the camera returned and try to buy other cards?

I don't know if this would apply to your problem but I have read that some people have reported bent pins in the camera's CF card socket and have correct the problem by carefully straighting them.

I would save money towards new camera. I myself have 10D and am thinking of moving up to 5D. However, 5D price is out of my hand. So , 40D is second option...

I had used the 10D since it first came out. It has been a remarkably good and reliable tool. When the 40D was announced, I looked over the features and decided there was enough reason to retire the 10D and buy the 40D.

From my experience of owning the 10D and now the 40D, I would put the $300 toward a new 40D without hesitation. The difference between the two cameras is not subtle.

I have owned the 10D since it came out. Now with the 40D I feel that there is sufficient advancement so that the money wou spend is well spent. I concur with the others and say buy a 40D. Get the 10D back and see if the pins are bent and try to fix it yourself, if it works you have a spare body, if not - you have an antique.

Is that happening with all your cards, or just one?

Err02 is a memory card error, which means it is usually related to a specific card. The first card I ever got was screwed up, and would err02 after 50 shots or so. I sent it back and got it replaced and I haven't had an error since.

So yeah, make sure it's happening on all your cards first, rather than just one. If it is, then it's obviously a camera problem, and then I can't help you.

If you need to know how to recover files from an Err02 though, it's easily done, and I can tell you how if you want to know. You can recover everything but file names.

I've never had that message. However, my luck with Lexar CF cards hasn't been good. After about a year (in both Canon and Olympus cameras), they started being write protected on their own. Reformating never worked and I gave up on them. SanDisk, on the other hand hasn't caused me any problem - yet.

With the card in a card reader, plug in to your windows machine.

Right click the drive in file explorer (not internet explorer), and click properties.
Tools.
Error-checking -> Check Now
Check both options, and click start.

All your shots should be copied to a folder at the root of the card caled FOUND.000 or similar. They will all just be named FILExxxx.CHK, but if change the extension to JPG or CR2, you should have your original file intact.
To change all the extensions at once:
Open a command prompt

Navigate to the folder you copied the files to (cd c: documents and settings/user/desktop/folder or whatever)
type: rename .CHK .JPG

That will rename them all to jpgs. If they are CR2s, use .CR2 instead. If you shot raw+jpeg, you'll have a bit more trouble. Your best bet would be to sort by file size in explorer, move the smaller set of files to a different folder, rename the files in the two folders accordingly (using the method above), then recombine them. Or just delete the JPGs

I was hoping you could instruct me on how to save all of the pictures from the card before I reformat it. It won't let me open the files when I insert the card into the computer, so I cannot view/save the photos.
