X-H2S Error on Formatting Cards--What to do?

I own an X-H2S that acquired in August of 2022 operating under firmware 7.2.0. Today, I am getting an error message when attempting to format both SD and CF Express cards. I have tried different brand cards but they all report the following error when formatting. I get a red bar at the top of the LCD that has in white letters FORMAT. To the left of the word format there is white box that has a red line outlining the box. In the white box there is a -1 at the top and an asterisk in the lower right corner. I have attached a photo of the error message. Unfortunately, the -1 and * in the white box are overexposed and not visible. What does this error code mean?

Despite not being able to format any of the cards, I am still able to record to the card. Additionally, if I select format (even though I get an error message) all recorded media is erased and I am still able to record to the card.

i have tried the following with no success:

1) Pulled the battery and let any residual charge in the camera run out

2) Reset the following:

- Stills menu reset

- Movie menu reset

- Set-up reset

- Initialize

Any thoughts on what I can do to clear this error would be appreciated.

Try the factory reset.

Have you formatted the cards in something other than you camera? If yes, you may have used settings that the camera does not like. Try formatting in a computer to FAT 32 and use all default settings.

Lets see where this takes you.

Hi Kenny:

Thank you for responding. The four resets that I mentioned in my post: 1) stills menu reset, 2) movie menu reset, 3) set-up reset, 4) initialize constitutes a factory reset.

Might you have other ideas?

Hi Morris:

Thank you for responding.

I have not formatted the cards in any device other than the X-H2S. Since I use MacOS I do not have a convenient way to format FAT32.

This formatting issue that I have is effecting every card that I own: SD Sony Tough 64 GB V90, Wyse Advance 128 GB V90 (your suggestion), CF Express Type B Lexar Professional 128 GB, and CF Express Type B Delkin Devices Black Type B 4.0 1TB. Both the Wyse and Delkin are cool running cards that have improved time before overheating in hot weather.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Hi All:

I took one of my SD cards and formatted in an X-T3. I got same the red bar at the top with the word format written inside the box. Funny, while I have been using Fuji cameras since 2017, I do not recall this red box at the top during formatting.

I think this is just normal behavior during formatting. it is just one of those things that I never thought about until today.

I am embarrassed. Thank you that all that replied.

High-capacity cards moved to exFAT long ago. That is also the file system the camera will format cards into so I doubt using FAT32 will solve anything aside from potentially causing more issues.

If you have the battery grip connected remove it and retry. If not remove the battery wait 1 min then retry.

If the error is still there save your settings, reset to default and retry. If ok reload you r settings. If still the error the camera needs to be serviced

recently as a sudden my XH2s got frozen with a "Picasso" like screen. removing the battery grip fixed the error

I did a search on this topic and came across a thread here in this forum dated 2023. In it, someone wanted to reset the xh2s back to original factory settings as when the camera was switched on for the first time. After some rancor, the OP found this setting to do the factory reset. "Settings > User Settings > Reset > all the settings then choose: Initialize"

Good luck.

How to reset X-H2S to factory state?

Thank you all for writing. The issue that I described is normal behavior. The X-H2S is working as intended. Please close this thread.

That is great to hear, what a relief 😀

May I ask, did a reset of the camera resolve the issue or was it something else? It would be helpful to others who may experience the same thing to know what the resolution was.

Bill,

What I see in the photo posted by the OP is the standard screen when the camera format the card. In the center you can see the small video of the format engine. The reference to the asterisk and the one is also what you get on the screen during the format process.

Am I dreaming ? or the camera worked well all the time ? what the OP describes (red band, asterisk, 1) is what I see on my 2 XH2s.

The last post of the OP seems to be in favor of what I think...

Apologies if I am wrong

Bob

Ah, OK. So, in other words, the camera wasn't misbehaving. Awesome!

Indeed ! :-)

Hi Bill,

Resetting the X-H2s did not change the red bar with the word Format inside. That red bar is normal behavior on Fujifilm cameras while formatting. I wish this thread would die because I am embarrassed that I did not recognize this and chose to post something that is normal and seeking help.

Thanks for the update, GS. Please, there's no need to feel embarrassed. You've joined an honorable club of which I am a charter member. If you saw that display and read it is a possible problem, odds are good others have done the same. This is the kind of thread that will save a lot of people similar grief.

Be well and enjoy the H2S :-)
