Are oly owners more satisfied????

Interesting thread. It appears that Oly users know what they want and are therefore less likely to be disappointed.

There are indeed some factors which make Oly DSLRs more attractive such as the only efficient dust buster (SSWF) on the market so far as well as the famous Oly colours which rarely necessitate much editing after the shot.

Olympus: the thinking man's camera?

Cheers!

It would be nice to think that Oly owners just love their cameras because they are such cool cameras. But there is a self-selecting factor here, too. By choosing something other than the obvious industry leaders, Oly users are zigging in a world that is zagging. That very willful independence often makes folks fonder of their choices than those who run with the crowd.

It applies to most niche markets; the buyer of a non-mainstream product generally buys it for reasons arrived at by personal judgement rather than the sales pitch of some box-mover on commission. So long as the buyer can trust his own judgement the satisfaction rating will be high.

Maybe Olympus cameras are built better and with higher quality than comparable N & C models? My experience with my Olympus cams certainly supports this theory.

Another possible factor - Canon customer support is just horrible below the professional level.

I love my E-1. It's built like a tank, has all the settings I want in an easy to reach location, captures excellent colors, and has never failed me. No complaints what so ever. The only thing I can say is it's getting pretty long in the tooth and Olympus is taking their sweet time replacing it.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with it.

at times i start thinking the grass is a little greener, And in some ways it might be. Then I will take a great shot with my E1 and think would this picture improve w/ a $2500.00 5d and about 85% of the time the answer is no. It is that 15% that knaws at my brain that I am afraid that one day I will give in to just to find that the grass isn't really greener just a different shade of green.

I do not know if Oly users are more satisfied than the users of other brands. I only know that I’m satisfied with my E-500, with its flaws and nuances it has served me well. Then again I think that no camera is perfect each one has its strong points and its weaknesses. I have used both Nikon and Canon and although I initially purchased the E-500 for its value I have been greatly rewarded by its capabilities. Overall the biggest limitation the E-500 has is the user.

I'm quite satisfied with Oly. If I don't want to camp out on a photo to perfection I can just adjust the RAW image and apply a little levels adjustments and USM and call it a day. I've only ever used Oly so I can't compare to the other side.

In our shop we sell a lot of all the major manufacturers with Oly being our number two, no kidding, in SLR sales. Perhaps it is because people have a tendency to not side with the juggernaught, I don't know, but I can tell you this: Olympus SLRs never get returned, they have an extremely low repair ratio (base on manufacturer defects, negligence is another thing of course), and people love, LOVE their prints.

That will continue to sell us on selling their system, I can tell you that.

It's not that they don't have their lemons, like everyone they do... but it would seem that the lemon factor is an awful lot smaller and, so far, has not affected us here.

And it is true that the color sells the system. We have a series of four shots of the same subject with four similar lenses at the same f/5.6 aperture and same shutter in controlled lighting and the Oly went straight to print far better with more saturation, better white balance and contrast control, in jpeg, than the other manufacturers did. That's appealing to the folks who have no wish to photoshop, who just want an SLR to take better pictures than their SLR and to take them faster and, whether hobbyists wish to believe or not, those photographers make up a rather large demographic in their own right.

Cameras were btw, the Rebel XTi (400D), Nikon D80, Pentax K10D and Oly E-500.

there are no better companies, only better images.

I am very satisfied with my Oly E-330.
I do not know what the others are.

Currently I never would buy something other - except. if i would get very much money I would buy a digital medium format camera or a seitz roundshot. that is the only valid alternative to my E-330.

First major factor is the kit lens (or lenses) bundled with the camera. The lens has so much to do with the image quality and if a person buys a two lens kit that includes the 40-150, their satisfaction is bound to be better than some cheap, poor performing kit lens.

Second, many have researched the cameras before purchasing. Olympus has the reputation of doing poorly in low light, so customers have low expectations in thie area. The camera way exceed those expectations. Canon does GREAT in low light, or so is the expectation. The customer hits the concert with a kit lens with a 5.6 aperture and is greatly disapointed. I would also imagine Canon sells a higher percentage of cameras as impulse purchases so the customers may hit the street with unrealistic expectations.

All of these manufacturers make good stuff. I think the results are more expectations related, as well as a wise choice to supply decent glass with the kit.

I came to Olympus DSLRs late - although in pre DSLR days I used several Oly compacts/bridge cameras including the superb C-8080. After using Canon, Nikon and Fuji bodies I would put Olympus at the top for me but could'nt give a definitive answer as to why. I suppose mainly because the e-1 is one of those classic cameras - far from perfect in some ways, especially when trying to capture flying birds in low light, but so good in other ways. he clincher was I had a load of last years pictures printed and the Oly ones had the best 'feel'. Having said that, I'm waiting to see how the new models perform with regard to things like AF speed - Olympus have so many strengths, it would be good if they could just improve a bit on their weaknesses. [Won't be buying another Canon whatever happens!]

I would think they are the colors and pictures are great. I have seen people from others switching to Oly but I havent seen Oly owners switching to the other brands.
