Well I took the Plunge I purchased a R1 for $699 shipped which was a great price I couldn't pass it down.

I Figured I didn't buy the F828 because of the Purple Fringing. And the shots I have seen on the forum is amazing and unlike others I don't like Changing Lenses. I did that once before with a Nikon. Never will again unless of course there is no other option. I also figured if Sony comes out with a DSLR with a Full Size CCD or CMOS as some have stated I may get that or at least try it out. and Keep the R1 for a Backup.

So I was wondering how much memory do I need, I currently own 10 256mb Memory Stick Pros. I had that many because I don't believe in putting all of my eggs in one basket because of the simple fact that if something goes wrong it usually does and I could loose those photos. I think with my F717 I could get like 86shots in Fine mode on those Sticks so should I figure halving it and say 43shots for the 10MP camera photos.

You need to get some bigger memory cards. After playing around with my R1, I started shooting everything in RAW. I can get 86 pics on a 2GB card. You're going to get less than a roll of film with the 256 MB ones. I'm thinking about getting a 4GB CF to keep in the camera too. Just my thoughts.
 
..I personally never shoot anything in RAW, am using a 1 gig card that I've only approached filling one day...used up about 800megs

On top of that I've tested pretty thoroughly in print and except for extreme situations there is virtually no difference between a 10mp capture and a 5mp capture upsized to 10mp in post. In other words there just is no reason to shoot above 5mp files unless you're shooting very large groups of people or similar images.

I think having 10 256 cards would last me 3 busy days.

On the other hand, memory is cheap and I hated swapping the little 128s in and out of my 707...

I shoot some in RAW, on most I do a 3 shot bracket for HDRI. I use 2 2gig cards and that just barely covers me when I am out all day shooting.

I have never run out of memory using both cards but 2 gig is not enough for me. It all depends on your shooting. In a pinch you can step down to 7 or 5 meg but then you cut into your cropping capability.
Memory is cheap, but I would definitely get a 2gig card to start.
I use a 2gig duo pro and a 2 gif CF, so both remain in the camera at all times.

Where did you get your R1 from? I've seen some advertised for $550 but knew those must be scams since everyone else is in the $700's...
 
I recommend downloading Raw Shooter Essentials. Take some shots in RAW and see what you can do with them in that program. That's the reason I shoot in RAW all the time. Even when I just want simple shots of a birthday party, the jpegs I get out of Raw Shooter are a lot better than the camera produces. When I'm done making a better jpeg, I delete the RAW file (for those party pics). For my serious shots, I archive the RAW files on DVD-Rs for storage.

Just have fun playing around with it. I didn't shoot anything in RAW until I started doing that and saw the results. Yes, it takes more time, but camera does jpegs when it does RAWs, so I live with the lower quality jpegs until I have time to convert the RAW files. Then I delete those "inferior" jpegs. ;-)

They offer the best value for money really - 1Gb is too small for RAW really for convenience and 4Gb too expensive ..

I'd check with your dealer and wait for the Sandisk Extreme III ones with Capture One bundled free, it's the best RAW converter for the E1 IMO

Here are 100% crops from a sharpened JPG compared to a Capture One RAW - no comparion

The jpg's out of the camera are less than perfect. The results (when you shoot raw) from RawShooter are head and shoulder better. That alone is reason enough to shoot raw.

Personally, I shoot only raw. The Sony R1 raw files are big (20MB each), so you will need a large card. As stated, the R1 is not a fast camera, so don't hyperventilate over getting a 'super fast' memory card. Just get one that is reasonably priced.

I have been using 4GB Hitachi microdrives (I have them for my dSLR) and they work great. I have also had them for years when the cost of the MD was much less than solid state memory. Today that has changed and solid state memory is cheaper than a microdrive. I just bought a 150x 8GB CF card for under $170. If it works without problems, I will but one or two more.

Don't worry about 'putting all your eggs in one basket'. I, personally, would worry more about all the swapping you would need to do by using small cards and the task of keeping track of them.

Get a memory card holder (www.inanycase.com) and number your memory cards.

That's true: the R1 is not a fast camera.
The need for a speedy card is up to your shooting style/subject.

If you take pics about a sleeping cat on the sofa, or flowers in a vase, or landscapes is fine any card.

Just because I got a fake card I made some testing. Here are the results (all RAW with 1Mb JPEG):
Ordinary MS: 3 frames in 36 seconds. (not a misstype=36")
Ultra II CF= 4 frames in 30 seconds
Sony MS Pro Duo HS 7 frames in 30 seconds
SanDisk MS Extreme III 8 frames in 30 seconds

Using your R1 ever for something where you need speed ( your friend's wedding - you could loose that famous kiss!) you will need then to buy another card.

Going JPEG? I don't know. Why buying a top of the line camera to not use it at maximum?
One suggestion was to shot 5 mp... hmmm
(Buy a Ferrari and fill it up with regular gas and drive it in a parking lot!)

Good advice. Your picture example is exactly what I was talking about. I wish I had known about the difference before I took all my pictures of Tokyo. None of those are in RAW. :-(
 
It's good to see the price finally coming down. I bought mine in Tokyo for just under $700 back in May. That's part of what made the R1 so attractive to me. Some of the entry level DSLRs were almost twice that when I was shopping.

I purchased the Camera through JR.com which I have used in the past for PC's nad audio equip. They matched a price from Tristate Cameras which I believe is down the street from them. TriState had the same gimmick as B&H and emails the price to you so once my Rep from J&R received the Email he added an extra $10 for S&H and sent it on itsway.

Yes I Tried SonyStyle but the Rebate expired and they would match J&Rs price a few days ago for $749 but when I called them back they were out of stock. So I jumped over to J&R since B&H was closed for some sort of Vacation or Renovations or something like that. I should see the camera next week I hope.
Hope that answered everyones questions about where I bought it and the price.

Ok onto the RAW versus JPG I have always used JPG but will deffinately consider the RAW since I saw the Comparison Shots shown on the Forum Thanks for that. I will primarily be using for Landscape Shots but also Partys, Vacations and the Occasional Weddings. I carry a W7 for everyday Photos which suites me fine.

I upgraded primarily for the Price Reduction. I have always enjoyed Sony Cameras and have been posting since Uly used to post but haven't lately just been too busy and not really needing any new info but I do scan the News and Forums from time to time.

I decided on the R1 mainly due to the Lens Quality and Build Quality and the Price.

PS Overstock has a 2Gig HighSpeed MemoryStick Duo for $79.99 is that a good buy or should I go with a cheaper no name Stick. thanks again.

Proper High speed Sonys and Sandisk U2/U3s make the lack of RAW buffer less of a problem - make sure you get the adapter with the stick as the R1 doesn't take DUOs direct, DUOs are the better move as you can use them in more things, standard Sticks are obsolete really now - 80US seems a good price and 2Gb the ideal size, they're £80 UK !! ..
