Ok, I've done a bit of research and narrowed it down to these services. What do you think?

What I am looking for:

-A site that will host Raw images/High Res shots and automatically resizes them for easier viewing (all these images must be available to family/friends
-Allows external linking of any size
-Easy upload process
-Is stable

-Future (i.e. Won't my pictures be safer on Flickr, than smugmug? yahoo servers vs. family business)

-A huge amount of storage - I don't want to have to worry about having to keep an eye on how many images I up
-Easy commenting for family/friends

I was thinking imageevent for a while because of the hosting of different files/customizable layout/ease of use, but the 1500 images allowed seems like too few. I don't want to erase and manage pictures to make sure everything can fit. Granted, you can upgrade to 3000 images at 100mb per file, but that's 60 dollars.

Then I was thinking Smugmug, because of the unlimited photostorage. Love the approach the staff takes and that it is a small business - don't know where they will be in 3/5/10 years...will it be safe to store photos there?

Finally, my computer geek friend was telling me Flickr is definitely the way to go because of server stability and community. He said it was also the easiest out of all of them and would allow 2 gb of space a month, a large amount. I love the comments and all that, but it's incredibly annoying that you have to be a member to leave one.

Be aware that the Terms of Use on Flickr prevent you from hotlinking photos from this forum.

Flickr allows hotlinking with one requirement: that when someone clicks on the picture, it has to take them to that picture's page in your Flickr account. But you can't do that on DPReview.

What the terms are saying is that you need a link back to each pictures picture page, not exactly how. You could easily post a picture and then att the url to the page below it if you want.

Me, I have never done this, and I don't know anyone who actually does. If flickr ever starts making a fuss of it I'll reconsider my use at that point, but until then I'm not going to worry about it.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with flickr so far. It's nice not to have to worry about storage at all.

I love flickr! I even started a group for 28-135 users...it's also nice to belong to several Canon groups and look at other peoples photos and exif data...a very good learning experience.

My preference is smugmug. I like the fact I can protect the pictures, load as many as I want at any size and generally, at the higher levels, can modify the page to my hearts content. If you decide you like smugmug you can use the number listed below to get $5 off of your subscription.

I've tried many of the others, and settled with Smumug myself. As far as free goes, Flickr was my favorite, but I had family pictures that I would like to share and restrict it from public access. I would have been content with Flickr if they had allowed a passworded galleries, but instead, access is granted by denoting whether another Flickr member was family or friend. So if I only wanted family to see, they would have to all sign up for Yahoo, and I would have to add them as category family, which was impracticle, and I could imagine families choosing not to view my pictures because of the hassle. So I went with Smugmug.

Take a look at my site to see if you like the layout and how it's organized:

I've been using Flickr (Pro) for 9 months. It's been really good to me, uploading any size files is no dramas. It's been relatively stable, and despite it's quirks, I'd say it's definitely worth the money. The whole community aspect is one of the drawpoints, and I never thought I'd get that involved but I have! I like the uploader tool for Mac OSX, it allows you to batch up tags and comments before posting.

I'm still twiching from yahoo's idocy with my email account so can't even think about paying them to host my photos. ImageEvent has been pretty good to me. Generally very fast to load my photos and uploading is very easy. You get 1500 photos with from I can tell unlimited storage for $24.95 yr. You can pay a one time fee of $24.95 for each additional 1500 photos but you only pay $24.95 to renew yearly - not sure where you got the $60 figure from.

I know you didn't like the 1500 image limit but that wasn't an issue for me since I'll never reach it. I've had IE for over a year and it has never failed me. A friend told me they are on a fast server too.

One thing I noticed with smugmug and keep in mind, this was with a few people but maybe it was something they were doing but it's worth checking out. I guess you uload a large size file and the software automatically creates the smaller sizes (s,m,L) for web and email. The problem is, when a file is resized, the sharpening is undone so some of the images we were looking at were somewhat soft. Like I said though, maybe it was something about how the files were uploaded.

Not to throw you down a completely different path but have you looked into some of the other picture applications that you set up yourself such as Gallery? I've used it for a couple years an am currently using Gallery2 with around 4,000 images and of course multiple resolutions and comment ability. Anyhow, just a thought, if web stuff interests you.

I have been on IE for a year now. The service is very fast and very reliable. It has never gone down, never lost my pictures, never had a problem. It is easy and fast to set up folders and albums. The staff is so responsive - there answers to questions are almost always same day. I am going to sign back up again.

Smugmug is just too slow. And I do not particularly like the page layouts and the look of the site.

I just can't say enough good things about smugmug. You can give your site a very custom look compared to some of the other companies. As far as support, I've e-mailed them a couple of times when I first started. They got back to me within the hour. I'm a power user. I've told my Wife it's the best 50 bucks I've ever spent.

I get the $60 from the following:
A regular 1500 file acct. is $25
To add supersize files (100mb/file) and 1500 more photos it's $35

Thus making it $60 a year.

I am doing smugmugs 7 day trial. So far, so good. It's upload speed is slower than Imageevent, but I still like some of the perks better in smugmug. Flickr is still there nagging at me since the community aspect is a lot better. I actually really like the resize option better but then there's problems with making galleries private and hosting the image on other sites.

some very nice pics in your albums...

So far I'm happy with imageevent. The only two "issues" I had were in one case I was adding and deleting to the same album simultaneously and things got messed up. The control file got corrupted. Customer service fixed it up withing a couple of hours. I've only hit the upload limit once, when I tried to upload a 17MB video. I haven't had any problems with photos - nearly reached the 1500 limit with over 4GB of files.

Cheers....Stu
