Hi,

I posted this on the Powershot forum earlier today I'm fishing for anyone that has this camera(series) with the same problem and what the fix was. It's not that I didn't get good replies I'm tapping this source as a last chance if someone has one for a carry around compact camera.

Hi!

I shoot a 60D but I had a friend with a G11 ask me to help her with her camera problem. Her lens won't retract on camera shutdown. When you turn it on it only stays on for a moment and the display says lens error restart camera. Shutting it down doesn't help. I tried to cold boot it(remove the battery with it on) but no help. Any ideas or a link to a previous post on the subject as to a fix..?

Don't know about the G11, but had same problem with an old APS film compact camera.

(a) old rechargeable battery is no longer able to hold enough charge to run the lens motor - replace the battery, or

(b) the mechanism is broken. Repair or replace.

Thanks for your thoughts..!

Had this problem with a Canon IXUS 850IS (European name). The problem appeared after the warranty period expired, and a new and better camera was available, so I ditched it and never looked back.

I have a G11 and G12. Your lens mechanism is most likely binding. The camera's microprocessor is commanding the lens to retract and sensing that the command is not being followed. Possibly, there's a piece of sand, dirt, or grit in the mechanism causing the binding. This is a repair/replace situation.

If you don't want to spend the money on a repair (understandable considering the age of the G11), you can try to gently blow the dirt out of the mechanism using a canned-air duster but I'd consider that a last-ditch effort. If you want it repaired, you might want a real camera tech playing with the lens assembly.
