Zoom in Video mode question

I am zooming in video mode and the light flickers a bit when I zoom in or out. I have set ISO to manual. WB is locked. AF is off. Shutter and f/stop are locked as well. Highlight tone priority is disabled as well.

Is there a good guide to setup the camera for manual control in video?

Is the lens a fixed aperture or is it variable? The default kit lens 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 is variable and that might be what you are seeing.

I took a course in art last winter. I learnt the difference between a fine oil painting, and a mechanical thing, like a photograph. The photograph shows only the reality. The painting shows not only the reality, but the dream behind it.

oh ok... I do have the kit lense... I guess its time to chuck it away and get something dedicated...

so how do I know that a lense does not have variable aperture? Prime has fixed aperture... but zooms usually have variable.. or am i missing something?

I know the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, Sigma 17-50mm f2.8, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, and Canon 17-55mm f2.8 have a fixed aperture when you zoom. The 18-55mm kit lens is a f3.5-5.6. So when you zoom the f-stop goes up. For example, if a lens is list as 2.8 and not 4.0- 5.6 or 3.5-5.6, then it stays at the aperture you set it at when zooming.

is there a way i can lock the f/stop at the higher rate... like 6 for example... whether i am at 18mm or 55mm....

i can't seem to find my way to lock it

The only way to "lock" it is to have a lens that it does not change on. Hence why you need to get a lens that is either a prime or like was mentioned a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. These lenses do not change. Although it would be cool if the kit lens did have this option to lock at the highest rate it just simply is not an option.

Maybe I am missing it but then again I do not shoot a lot of video. How do you set you aperture in video mode? I do not see a way. I understood it just simply did whatever the lens was able to which is fine with fixed aperture lens but not so good with the kit lens.

i did manage to lock the f/stop at 7.... but still when i zoom in it gets dark during the zoom is taking place and once in the full 55m zoom it turns light again. if it doesn't go dark during the zoom the brightness of the shot should remain the same at 18mm and 5mm....

not sure why it goes dark during the zoom is taking place

Maybe I am missing it but then again I do not shoot a lot of video. How do you set you aperture in video mode?

you can by holding on the AV button and then moving the dial... please check my above post for my experiences with that

Can you walk me through how you locked it?

When I am in movie mode and I hold down AV I am changing my exposure not the aperture.

OK I got it so you have your movie exposure set to manaul not auto like I had mine. OK now to test some movies out and see if I can reproduce.

do let me know what you end up with. cheers

Home. Maybe ISO was set to auto? Seems like something's being changed during zoom.
I get the same results. even though I have locked everything, or atleast i think i have.

So even with a high fixed aperture.... it still changes it while zoom. I guess will have to test a fixed aperture lens to really find out.

OK repeating you test with the kit lens I see what you are talking about. When I did it with the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 VC lens it does not have the problem. Even though you are hard setting the aperture as the lens crosses where it changes the aperture it gets darker for a second then corrects itself. The fixed Tamron with f/2.8 does not have the problem since it never changes.

Repeated test locked or not kit lens has same results. Locked or not a fix aperture lens does not do that. Test was done with the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC lens.
