Hello all

Searched far and wide for help with this one to no avail.

Is there a way to assign a function button to turn on or off a flash unit on the camera? I can assign Fn1 to dissable / enable flash, but it does not toggle on or off, to turn off you have to keep the button pressed.

Any help / advice grewatly recieved.

All the best

Jon

The custom controls are either a "press and hold" or "press and scroll".

Custom settings menu -> Controls -> Custom controls (shooting) -> Press + command dials -> Flash mode/compensation

If you assign that, you can hold down the function button and scroll the flash settings (including turning flash off).

It's not perfect, but it at least works.

perhaps this is not an ideal solution for you... but you could try this: f11: Customise I menu >>> select the 'flash mode'.

Then there are four options that can be selected from the I menu, and you have to go through five 'clicks' to get to flash=Off .. it is pretty quick.

...... it seems to me that given the gyrations required to turn off the flash using a camera control would be more involved than simply pressing the off button on the flash.

Perhaps I'm missing something (my wife tells me that's frequently the case :-) ). Is that not a workable solution ?

This could also be done faster and easier with My Menu and the My Menu first entry option.

To do this, you need to set "Flash Modes" as the first entry in My Menu.

Then assign the "My Menu first entry" option to a function key of your choice.

However, I would generally agree with Schrodinger's cat's comment, this might be the most convenient way to turn on/off the flash.

yes, that is another way to get to the same place for the "flash mode" setting but it seems that after the setting up of My Menu you still have some five 'click' to get to 'flash=Off'

Actually, it only takes two clicks and a directional control with the joystick/control pad.

First, press the hotkey for My Menu first entry, which instantly opens the “Flash Mode” menu if set as the first entry in My Menu.

Then press the joystick up once and you will be taken to the bottom menu item "flash off", which you then have to confirm with OK.

However, it will also depend on which setting you use in flash mode.

Unfortunately, there is no flash on/off option, otherwise you could access it using the My Menu method without scrolling.

This is possible with subject recognition on/off, for example.

All you have to do is press the hotkey and you are immediately taken to the correct menu item, subject detection on/off.

This is not possible with flash because there is no linked on/off menu item, only off and flash on is linked to the different flash settings which is why you also have to scroll, to activate and deactivate the flash.

ofc depending where you have finnish last time ... both way can be done with the same quantity of 'clicks' (ofc those 'clicks' include the "directional control with the joystick/control pad") to put flash off

Yeah, I'd suggest using this method. Pretty instant control of compensation and flash mode/off. I have it assigned to Fn3 myself.

Thanks for your reply, yes it is a solution, but the company I work for has a mixture of Canon and Nikon gear, and you can do this on an R5M11 and was wondering if you could do it on a Z8.

PLease look at the Nikon Guide for f2 Custom Controls (Shooting), which lists the deafults and all the assignable controls.

You will discover that "[Flash Disable/enable]" is assignable - "If the flash is currently enabled, it will be disabled while the control is pressed. If the flash is currently off, front-curtain sync will be selected while the control is pressed."

Since just about every flash/trigger has an on/off button why also have this on the camera body -- I fully utilise all programable buttons for other roles and seek not to use buttons for easy to reach roles.
