Z8 CF card refuses to work with Windows 11

Hi All. I'm using a ProGrade Digital 256GB CFexpress 4.0 Type B Gold Memory Card I just got with my Nikon Z8 camera. It's impossible for it to work properly on my Win 11 24H2 home PC. When I insert it in the card reader or even USB-C directly from the camera, Windows briefly has the 'Autoplay' pop-up and then reports "There's a problem with this drive, Scan the drive now and fix it." I can actually see the card and click on it. But errors out trying to copy off pics. I've done a full format in camera and quick format and still doesn't work. I also tried changing drive letters for the card reader and using a different card reader. No dice.

I haven't tried formatting it from within Windows as I'm worried it will damage the card or cause issues the next time it's in the camera. I read online that these CF-b express cards can be detected as a NVMe hard drives and not removable memory cards. In researching I found a few posts online that mention this with no solution. I'm not going to reinstall windows or format HDs, which was often a "solution" that ultimately never worked for others. My computer is completely updated with all Win updates and even my motherboard has all the latest firmware updates and same for camera and memory card reader. What's odd is that if I try this on a Win 10 laptop or a different Win 11 laptop, no issues. I can't find any clues from how it works on those and what I could change on my home PC.

Anyone hear of this issue? Any possible fix?

Try the obvious: format the card under Windows so that Windows can read it.

You attached the same card from the Z8 and the same reader to a different PC, and it worked there?

so the card is good, and the reader is good. It seems to be your Win 11 setup somehow.

Does the card reader show your card folder and filenames at all?

For direct connection to the Z8 with the usb cable, check this setting: setup usb connection. It needs to be MTP/PTP. But that's not likely the problem here.

As JTHomas39 wrote, you know it will work with Win11 because it works with another PC. So … figure out what is different between them.

The problem is your PC setup, not the card. I would start by looking for antivirus apps that may be preventing it from working. Then look at startup apps, etc.

Are there any detected problems if you go into device manager on the PC? Perhaps you have a USB/driver issue. Have you confirmed you have all the latest drivers from your mobo manufacturer installed (not just the latest BIOS?)

Also, have you tried a different USB port? It may be worth it to try all of them, as sometimes they are separated, with some being managed by different controllers on the mobo.
