Computer crash during import from Z9

To answer a few questions…

Main computer is Mac Studio M1Ultra 128 GB Ram MacOS 15.5…This computer shuts down during standard preview rendering…spoke with Apple without any resolution , reinstalled MacOS with no change and ran Disk Utility and found many errors (not sure what they mean yet and trying to get to the bottom of that now)

Currently trying to download the files on MacBook Pro but the upload process is stuck (clearly something is wrong) but the computer has not shut down yet so that is suggesting to me there is something with the files…ran Disk Utility on the MacBook yesterday with no problems, will be interesting to run again after my attempt at uploading the photos.
Right that’s a very powerful machine so should have no problems with rendering Z9 files in Lightroom.Did you do a clean install by erasing the drive or simply do a quick reinstall? If I were you, I’d erase the drive, reformat and start over making sure you have everything backed up. If that doesn’t fix it, you might have a serious problem. If that doesn’t work, you could try installing macOS on an external drive and boot from that but the fact you are getting drive errors suggests it’s a problem with the internal drive.

There does seem to be an issue with the files - not clear how they would cause malfunction of the drives though but it would be interesting to hear what happens with the MacBook Pro.

Best of luck.

It was a quick reinstall…reformatting and starting over is likely on the horizon but it’s such a pain in the ass I’m trying my best to avoid it.

I know it would be tedious, but I would try to find if there’s a single image file (or several) in the problem set that’s causing the problem. Load (say) half the files in one run, then the other. If one of the halves fails, divide the failing set in two and try again. With ~500 files this will take no more than 8 tries to identify the bad file. Or rule that out as a problem.

What you wrote makes me think it's not on the computer part, so probably no need to do all this hard work.

Try what I adviced you about your Z9 instead first.

Only then it will be time to see if your system and computer have a problem.

I reset the Z9 to factory a couple of days ago and as far as I can tell now, the failure of the camera was a coincidence. The deeper I looked into the computer the weirder things got and it became clear to me that (at a minimum) there was definitely a computer issue that I just could not figure out. It drives me crazy to walk away from a problem without understanding the cause / solution but after several days of this crap I was ready to tap out and move on so, I've done a full format, reinstalled almost everything from scratch or backup and so far...so far, no problems.

Ok, glad you worked it around finally. Maybe you should (and did) also check for dust accumulation too :

I regularly remove dust inside my minis to avoid overheating (I should do it again, BTW, it's becoming hot these days at my place :) )

Great you got it sorted (apparently). I suspect the internal drive file system got corrupted so the clean install has worked. Although generally not necessary on modern Macs, it can be good to get rid of everything and start over. With modern systems you can just download software easily. Back in the day it was a matter of making sure you had all the software media (DVDs, CDs, floppy discs) to hand and it was slow. Now it’s a few hours for me to get everything up and running again.

Hard to follow all replies. Thanks for summarizing.

I think he should file a support ticket at Adobe, they will be interested in this.
