Maybe of some help to someone. I tried 15 times or so to install latest Z7 firmware update. ( i know. Madness. doing the SAME thing over and over. A form of madness ) Downloaded onto desktop. ( windows ) Dragged and dropped onto camera formatted memory card. It was there, i saw it. Into camera. NOTHING. Wouldn't install, wasn't even showing. I then formatted the card ON THE COMPUTER. Dragged the update onto the card. Into camera. HEY HO. It was recognised and updated the camera.

Which folder on the card did you drop the .bin file into, the times it would not recognize?

Have you dropped the bin-file in the root directory of the memory card and is the file for the Z7 and not the Z7II?

I just dragged and dropped the bin file into the camera formatted card. Thr root dir'. Countless times. Only worked AFTER formatting card on the computer.

it was for Z7. With bin file on camera formatted card. Just wouldn't work. It worked only after formmaing the card on the COMPUTER. Very strange.

Probably something was wrong with the card after formatting on the camera. Most likely some glitch. Glad it worked after formatting the card on the computer.

Otherwise I would have guessed that you might have downloaded the firmware for the Z6 instead of for your Z7 or the download was corrupted. But clearly that wasn't the problem.

You can always re-format the card in the camera (again), recopy the FW to the card, and see if the camera recognizes it. (if it does, the option to delete FW from camera will be enabled).
If so, the card format might have been bad, previously? And the reformat on computer just by chance resolved it.

PS: My Z7 updated w/o issue, earlier; camera formatted card.

I just updated my Z7. I formatted the CFE card twice and installed a freshly recharged ENEL 15c battery. All went well.

But I was nervous. This thread and the Z6 thread gave me pause. If one is the original owner of either of these cameras, it is likely the camera has been updated a few times. That the owner knows what dot do. I have not had any issues this update is supposed to fix. But I like to stay current on updates.

So I am glad to report no issues.

It is probable there were 2 files on the card.

If yes the "top" file identifies the camera body - AND HAS TO BE DELETED - before the firmware can update.

Formatting on the computer likely removed the camera identifying file - allowing the firmware once added to update.

Just to make sure it easn't me. I followed the nikon download instructios for my Z50=2. Camera formatted card. It worked a dream. Must have something going on between the Z7 and sony XQD card.

YEP, maybe that was it. BUT, i've done updates lots of times with absolutely zero problems. I did an update with my Z 50-2. Camera format. No problem. I just thought that it might help someone else if they ever suffered the same problem.
