Hi,

Having had a Z6 (1) for many years, I've just bought a Z6 III which is a big upgrade in many ways. I use Snapbridge to write geo co-ordinates into my photos which has always worked well.

When I connect my iPhone XR which is GNSS compliant via SnapBridge to the Z6 III I can't get the Location Data option to appear in the Setup menu as stated in the Reference Guide and manual. I've also tried this with a Nokia 7.2 which is GNSS (GLONASS) compliant.

Geo co-ordinates are correctly and successfully tagged into the photo's on both cameras. On my Z6 (1) the Location Data menu option displays the current location etc correctly.

I have deleted the Snapbridge app from my iPhone restarted the camera and re-paired it with Snapbridge, turned off and on etc but still nothing appears.

I appreciate Snapbridge is a debateable item to use but have had good results so far and it looks like it will add co-ordinates OK with the Z6 III. I would welcome any advice and help on how I can get this option to show on the camera menu.

UPDATE :-

Using a Foolography Unleashed Bluetooth device plugged into the Z6 III, the Location Data menu option appears when connected to both the iPhone XR and Nokia 7.2 so both IOS and Android.

I can only assume the issue now lies with Snapbridge... I have opened a support ticket with Nikon and will update once I have their reaction/solution.

Nikon have responded with the very standard glib 'here is a link to the on-line manual for getting location data into images'. The app has full location privileges etc and I'd read the manual hence the GNSS compliant etc. As the objective was to get location data into the images which it does I'll leave it there and hope Nikon fix it one day as it's not a major issue.

I've completed the Nikon Support feedback survey with suitable feedback...

Presumably you had Snapbridge auto connect and the location option on in the app. I recall it being buried somewhere for the Z6iii. It works fine, and in fact with the new connection options it seems pretty quick. Partial screenshot below.

Warning- if you have more than one device paired you need to make sure you select that one, so I have to switch between my iPad and iPhone.

Hi,

Many thanks for the info and I've found it under the Connect to Smart Device menu (remember to scroll down...) instead of being Location Data directly under Setup Menu where it appears on the Z6 (I) and when using the Foolography Unleashed Bluetooth device.

The clue was the Location Data (Smart Device) in the screenshot instead of just Location Data

Many thanks again

SETUP > Location data (external) only appears if you have an NMEA GPS device physically connected the camera in some way.

SETUP > Location data (internal) appears on the Z9 because it has a built-in GPS receiver.

If you use SnapBridge, GPS data appears within the SETUP/NETWORK > Connect to smart device menus.

Many thanks Thom, Yep, Snapbridge connects and all is now good as I've found the location data under the Connect to Smart Device menu set.

BTW Nikon Support are still if SnapBridge has iPhone app location permissions which it does so still pretty basic knowledge and trouble shooting on their part.

Thanks again all for your assistance

If you're in Africa and you don't have international cell service, can the Snapbridge connection to the Z III still work with the cell phone for location data?

The cell phone needs some way of knowing where it is. If it has GPS built-in, the answer would be yes, but not all phones have a dedicated GPS receiver (or don't expose it to apps).

Cell tower tracking can be faster and more reliable in urban environments than trying to lock onto GPS signals.

Thanks Thom.
