Z6 III firmware bug?

I recently updated my new Z6 III to firmware 1.10

If I have it set to Viewfinder Only, and Touch Screen Functions set to OFF, I have a major problem where if my nose touches the screen it will move the focus point. I can purposely touch my nose to the screen and it beeps every time and repositions my focus area every time (if EVF is ON). Why is it doing this if I have Touch Screen Functions set to OFF???

Interestingly, if I take my eye away from the EVF (so it goes dark) and the main screen is still dark (because I have it set to Viewfinder Only), if I tap on the main screen, it doesn't beep or reposition my focus area. This is how'd I'd also expect it to act when my face is up against the EFV, but it isn't working correctly.

Can anyone else try this out on firmware 1.10 and see if it does the same thing?

Thanks!

Make sure that is off as well

I have it set to [OFF] - "Touch Shutter Disabled" which works great except when I'm in EFV Only mode and my eye has the EVF enabled, it will let me move the focus point with my nose (I can see it move, usually to the lower right corner of the EVF where my nose hits since I use my left eye).

Something seems wrong.

Yeah, I think I have that also.

When I set 'prioritize viewfinder' it doesnt happen.

OK, I'll try that setting mode tonight and see if the screen stops registering my nose.

I contacted Nikon tech support and they want me to ship my camera into a service center for evaluation. I feel like this is much more likely a firmware issue?

That's interesting guidance. Nikon doesn't have a Nikon Z6III laying around to test this on?

Right?

Hoping some people here running v1.10 firmware on their Z6 III can confirm if they have same issue or it's just my camera, in which I guess I'd have to send it in to Nikon.

I'll try to mimic your settings on my copy and play around with it in the next couple days to see I get the same result.

OK, that would be helpful!

I think I should really be using "Prioritize Viewfinder (2)" setting anyways after reading the descriptions.

I am definitely having the nose touchscreen issue in "Monitor Only" mode. I'll test Prioritize Viewfinder 1 and 2 modes tonight.

I also found this on this forum which may be my problem:

Touch fn is a separate function for using the touch screen when your eye is up to the viewfinder, commonly on cameras that don’t have a joystick, to move the focus point.

As someone pointed out, when you’re not using the viewfinder the touch screen has its own touch functions which can be cycled through using the on screen button. This is completely different from the f4 touch fn setting.

So, I need to check out setting f4 and see if it's set to move the autofocus point and can do that even if the Touch Function mode on the screen is set to Off.

Can you include a picture of your monitor? There should be some indication on the screen that you can touch it. Or turn off touch. Watch for the boxes around a few settings.

I think your camera is working correctly.

~~~
f4: Touch Fn is only in effect when you are looking through the EVF.
It has a submenu with three selections:
enable/disable touch Fn On/Off
assign touch Fn --> there's a list to select, including Move Focus Point, which you likely have set. I tried out grid on/off for a while, but it only works with the EVF view, so I turned it off again.
Touch Fn area. which part of the rear monitor screen is affected by touch when using the EVF. Full area, half area, quarter area.
~~~

Separately, the rear monitor has it's own touch settings. These are in effect when the EVF is off and the monitor is on.

Setup--> Touch Controls --> with a submenu, for moving the focus point, or applying AF, or AF+shutter to take a picture.

But it's easier just to click the Touch box in the bottom left of the monitor to make these changes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AF beep sounds:
Setup-->Camera Sounds has a submenu:
Shutter sounds, with volume and sound style choices
Beep, with volume and pitch. This is for touch screen and AF sounds, and choose On / Off (ouch controls only) / Off. It confused me: "Off (touch controls only)" is for menu beeping, but no beep for moving the focus point via monitor touching. it's "Off for AF touch"
I have Beep turned off. I don't want the menus or the touch AF to beep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Prioritize Viewfinder (2): EVF is on when the eye is close to it, and the monitor is normally off, except for Playback or Menu presses. This version (2) also turns on the EVF briefly when the camera is powered on or the AF is pressed.

I don't see any use for this extra EVF activation. The useful Hogan Guide to the Z6 iii says it's to mimic a DSLR firmware version. I can hold the camera away from my eye and see the EVF light up, but it's not really usable without the eye quite close to it.

I decided to update the firmware to 1.10. It didn't have any useful changes for me, but I might as well be up to date. And it appears that older Z cameras seemed to get undocumented AF improvements or other minor changes, so maybe it will help.

After it finished, I looked through the EVF. Oh no!! my nose is moving the AF box!

Wait a minute -- I had left f4 turned On when replying to this thread above. I turned f4 back to Off, and then the focus box doesn't move, as expected.

~~~
The 1.10 update does include "shutter angle" instead of shutter speed for Shutter priority video. I should try it.
Thank you! Crisis averted! haha
I also just used setting f4 to turn off touch functions while using the EVF. :)
If anyone runs across this thread in the future, note: the touch functions button on the large screen has settings, but setting f4 also has touch functions settings for when you're using the viewfinder.
"just ship it in"--how tech support avoids doing its work. (Applies to more companies than simply Nikon, of course.)
I actually had something similar with my Z50 last night at a school music concert. I was trying to take a photo through the EVF and my nose was hitting the zoom in touch button, so it was messing up the shot with the framing. Happened a couple times.
One reason I like flippy screen better. I can flip the back screen around when I don’t need it.
