Yes, my Win8 computer is not the latest. It is already about 1.5 years old. Strange that up until about 3-4 weeks ago youtube was fine on it though. I guess the hardware suddenly got ancient! There's a work-a-round (if you have an old computer, HTML5 will play choppy videos; trust me). Still, it's more likely that you have an old computer and it's having issues playing HTML5 video.![]()
I just booted up my old Acer Win7 netbook with an Atom 455, 1gb ram, 250gb hd using the same wifi and Firefox. Seems like youtube is working with no problems. I right clicked on the youtube video and it says it is using flash. There's a work-a-round (if you have an old computer, HTML5 will play choppy videos; trust me). Link to a flash test:I am using Win8-64 and have not had any youtube problems on this computer for the last 1.5 years, but just about 3 weeks ago youtube stopped working. Sometimes it will play a few seconds of a video and then stop. Other times it will play, but there is no sound. Other times it won't play at all. Other times it will display an error message. It doesn't work using the current Chrome or Firefox. Anyone have any ideas?
Maybe Chrome is at fault for Henry? When browsing using Iron, it auto-defaults to HTML5 despite having the Flash plugin installed. Again, not sure about Linux. Easy way to find out is right click on the lower menu part of a youtube video. It will tell you options that are obviously either related to flash or html5.![]()
All the major browsers support HTML5 quite well nowadays. As I recall, Firefox defaults to Flash; not sure how well it supports HTML5 or why it won't use HTML5 player.![]()
I am temporarily in a different location with different internet service. Also, I have a wired connection this time so I did new speed tests using the site you suggested and the earlier one I had used. Here are the results.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I experienced the same issues you are having. My youtube is still not working in the same ways and still uses HTML5 instead of flash in both the latest Firefox and latest Chrome. Anyway, I just wanted to update this thread with the new internet speed tests.
By the way, I ran the tests several times using both websites and the first website always reported much higher speeds than the second. Strange. I suppose if I had used your website a few weeks ago it would have reported higher speeds then too.
That is very interesting! I have Java on my pc, but I need it to run JAlbum which I use to create my photo galleries:As I mentioned in an earlier post, I experienced the same issues you are having.
I have conclusively found the problem, at least as it relates to my computer - Java.
This evening, I installed Java as a requisite for connecting to my WD My Cloud, and found that Flash no longer worked. Luckily, s a precaution I started Acronis Try & Decide before installing Java so I could choose to dismiss all changes if anything went awry. I repeated the procedure 2 more times, with the same result - no Flash after the Java installation.
Between each installation of Java, I tried various things, such as removing & reinstalling Flash, removing any remnants of older versions of Java, etc., but nothing fixed the problem. I shall remain Java-less ;-)
I'm 100% certain it caused the problem for me. I can't say for sure if that's the case for you, or why it's not a widespread occurrence - perhaps we both have a specific combination of software interacting poorly. That is very interesting! Of course, from time to time I update Java since Oracle comes out with security updates. I don't know when the last time I updated was, but probably a month or two ago. That is weird that newer versions of Java prevent flash from being on the pc and cause youtube to now work. I will update Java today and see if whatever bug Oracle introduced has been fixed.
Thank you for the info!
Hopefully, Patco has identified the issue (it's a strange problem for sure) and it's only a conflict with java. That is very interesting! I have Java on my pc, but I need it to run JAlbum which I use to create my photo galleries:

Maybe later I'll try this on my other computer that has very little software installed.
