youtube stopped working

There's a work-a-round (if you have an old computer, HTML5 will play choppy videos; trust me). Still, it's more likely that you have an old computer and it's having issues playing HTML5 video. :)

Yes, my Win8 computer is not the latest. It is already about 1.5 years old. Strange that up until about 3-4 weeks ago youtube was fine on it though. I guess the hardware suddenly got ancient! :-) Anyway, the specs are:

i7-3630QM, 8gb ram, 1tb hd

My old Win7 computer that still works with youtube has an i3, 8gb, 500gb. My Android tablets that still work with youtube are a couple of years old.

You're's is not as old and my old Betsy (may she now rest in peace). Still, I bet you it's somehow and HTML5 issue. Since you said you are using Chrome, check the Apstore for. Using Flash to play Youtube videos made a big difference with Old Betsy. lol

:)

I just booted up my old Acer Win7 netbook with an Atom 455, 1gb ram, 250gb hd using the same wifi and Firefox. Seems like youtube is working with no problems. I right clicked on the youtube video and it says it is using flash.

Fairly recently I've noticed that some videos stop playing partway in and they just refuse to load more. Sometimes closing the browser and shutting the browser down totally and then starting again will make them work. I'm not sure what the deal is. Even if I don't re-start the browser, there will be other video it will play fine, even 4k stuff, and then others it will just jam on and get stuck.

I am using Win8-64 and have not had any youtube problems on this computer for the last 1.5 years, but just about 3 weeks ago youtube stopped working. Sometimes it will play a few seconds of a video and then stop. Other times it will play, but there is no sound. Other times it won't play at all. Other times it will display an error message. It doesn't work using the current Chrome or Firefox. Anyone have any ideas?

If you have a browser with the Flash plugin properly installed (even an old version, as is the only choice on Linux) YouTube will play a video using Flash even if it has an HTML5 equivalent.

Currently HTML5 is used only for devices that have no Flash player available, such as iPad and Android tablets.

Sorry Henry, I have no idea what your problem could be.

When browsing using Iron, it auto-defaults to HTML5 despite having the Flash plugin installed. Again, not sure about Linux. Easy way to find out is right click on the lower menu part of a youtube video. It will tell you options that are obviously either related to flash or html5. :)

Maybe Chrome is at fault for Henry?

Or he has unwittingly set his browser to use HTML5 in preference to Flash.

I was just posting what happens in the latest version of Firefox on Linux Mint 17 and Windows 7.

As I recall, Firefox defaults to Flash; not sure how well it supports HTML5 or why it won't use HTML5 player. :)
All the major browsers support HTML5 quite well nowadays.

I visited this page and after clicking Request the HTML5 Player, youtube videos appeared in that player instead of Flash.

have you cleared the browser caches? I not, try Ccleaner on it's default settings

I just did a speed test using this website and here are the results. I am using wifi.

I am temporarily in a different location with different internet service. Also, I have a wired connection this time so I did new speed tests using the site you suggested and the earlier one I had used. Here are the results.

My youtube is still not working in the same ways and still uses HTML5 instead of flash in both the latest Firefox and latest Chrome. Anyway, I just wanted to update this thread with the new internet speed tests.

By the way, I ran the tests several times using both websites and the first website always reported much higher speeds than the second. Strange. I suppose if I had used your website a few weeks ago it would have reported higher speeds then too.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I experienced the same issues you are having.

I have conclusively found the problem, at least as it relates to my computer - Java.

This evening, I installed Java as a requisite for connecting to my WD My Cloud, and found that Flash no longer worked. Luckily, s a precaution I started Acronis Try & Decide before installing Java so I could choose to dismiss all changes if anything went awry. I repeated the procedure 2 more times, with the same result - no Flash after the Java installation.

Between each installation of Java, I tried various things, such as removing & reinstalling Flash, removing any remnants of older versions of Java, etc., but nothing fixed the problem. I shall remain Java-less ;-)

That is very interesting! I have Java on my pc, but I need it to run JAlbum which I use to create my photo galleries:

Of course, from time to time I update Java since Oracle comes out with security updates. I don't know when the last time I updated was, but probably a month or two ago. That is weird that newer versions of Java prevent flash from being on the pc and cause youtube to now work. I will update Java today and see if whatever bug Oracle introduced has been fixed.

Thank you for the info!

I'm 100% certain it caused the problem for me. I can't say for sure if that's the case for you, or why it's not a widespread occurrence - perhaps we both have a specific combination of software interacting poorly.

Maybe later I'll try this on my other computer that has very little software installed.

Hopefully, Patco has identified the issue (it's a strange problem for sure) and it's only a conflict with java.

You may want to see if removing the java related browser extensions and plugins in Firefox and other browsers fixes the issue and allows a flash player installation (and better html5 performance using Chrome, too), so that programs you're using (JAlbum, etc.) can still call java, without anything java related running in your internet browsers.

Or, if not, uninstall everything java related, then see if flash player installs OK. Then, reinstall java again and remove the java related plugins and extensions from your internet browsers.

IOW, you can still have the java runtime environment installed on your PC for use by programs, without the browser plugins for it installed (and allowing access to java from an internet browser is a really bad idea anyway, since too many security vulnerabilities are found in it on a regular basis).

Follow up:

I installed Java 7 on two other computers, Win 7 & Win 8.1, with absolutely no issues - Java & Flash are both working well.

As I alluded to earlier, there may be some of us that have a particular driver or software installed that is causing incompatibilities between Java and Flash. Considering all the items I have installed/uninstalled over the last few years, I'm not really surprised about my situation.

I'm sure if you send your computer to Jim, he'd be happy to fix it for you ;-)
