The lightest trace of silicone grease effects a complete cure.
Not really. Because you have to apply the grease periodically, and because you don't really know where all that grease is going...
"All that grease" is less than a pinhead! As I said - the lightest trace. I've been doing this about once a year for around three years now and not had any problems.

BTW, why the HELL the hood is so hard to remove?????? In my copy too.
It isn't if you use a dry silicone spray, like this in the U.K.:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223403

I leave the lens cap on and spray the lubricant onto a tissue - it dries almost instantly. I then wipe the lens and hood bayonets with the tissue to leave a barely detectable film of silicone. The hood then fits as easily and smoothly as when it was new. Done this a couple of times over the last year and never had any problems.

You can also use the same lubricant for the barrel of a zoom lens.

Now you've got me worried, considering that I ordered a new 55-200 SWD from B & H the other day - I'm expecting delivery tomorrow.

Thankfully, I ordered it on my Amex card which will at least extend the factory warranty for an extra year.

For the longest time I have just left the hood on mine in the shooting position because the bag I'm using has ample space to allow it. I only removed it before sending the lens in and noticed how hard it was to remove. I remember you mentioning this before so I'll be deciding once the lens comes back whether or not to just put the hood back on semi-permanently or just leaving it off. I don't use anything that would require it being removed so will probably go back to what I have been doing.

Looking back at it, I bought my lens in August, 2008 and I know I experienced the clicking noise well before the end of the one-year warranty and simply ignored it, so this repair expense is on me.
Received an email from Olympus that my 12-60 is on its' way back to me. From Olympus's repair site, looking the dedicated page for my lens, the repairs look to have been extensive...

"REPLACED 3 ZS FRAME UNIT ( APERATURE ) AND MAIN CIRCUIT BOARD. ADJUSTED , CHECKED AND CLEANED. FIRMWARE UPDATED."

It's supposed to be delivered Friday, and wouldn't you know, I am off Friday and Monday because I'm going to see my daughter at her college and will be leaving Friday morning long before UPS ever would show up, so the lens will sit in the box until I get home Monday!

You might consider getting the extended warranty, sometime before the main 1 year warranty expires (the product number is 260920 ). If you look around, you may find them for as little as $30 or so, and it is, IMO, a welcome bit of insurance for a $700+ lens.

Great!! Glad it didn't take long. I sent mine 2 days ago. I hope I have good luck too, since I do need my glass.

When you get the first email from Olympus that they have the lens and they give you a reference number, start checking the page on their repair site dedicated to your lens repair because, if they do with yours like they did with me, Olympus does not send a follow-up later that they have an estimate ready for your review. It just shows up out there and you have to approve it on that page.

I can get a 4 year extended factory warranty from Olympus for $80 - I'll probably go this route.

Just an FYI, I'm sending mine back to them to check again. It seems like the new aperture mechanism is not calibrated correctly. The lens is underexposing by a good half stop compared to both my 40-150 or 50-200 at the same aperture and focal length using either my E30 or E620.

Believe it or not, you're lucky. The mail company says my lens was delivered to Oly 10 days ago, and Oly service is not able to confirm this yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I feared, sending a lens for repair to Oly is a potential nightmare...

I sent my lens 18 days ago for repair.
Not a word from Oly.
I sent several emails just asking if they received my lens.
Not a word from Oly.

I sent an email to Oly Japan. They told me to call the service center.

I called them, and they told me that they've sent my lens to anoother place in another city, and gave me a phone number. I called the second number, and they told me that they only fix Canon stuff (!!), that they have not received my lens (!!!!!) and that they have no idea where it is (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

And now what, Oly.......?

When I sent mine in the first time I did insure it for $800. Now it's going back a second time because it's still not working right..... and I'll be insuring it again.

The insurance only covers the product until Oly received it. And they confirmed that they received it. So, no insurance company is involved.

Mail insurance does not cover what Oly does with the lenses in their own service center... Oly did receive my lens.

Louis,

It seems to me that when Olumpus confirmed that they received your lens, that they and only them are very responsible for what could happend to that lens afther that.

What they did with your lens afther receiving it, felt under the responsebility of Olympus.

The only thing you could do is to urge them to keep you properly informed and to ask for a reasonable term to deliver it back in good order, according your local law or the international garanty statements they established themselfs.

Of course you could urge them as well to deliver the lens back, within a reasonable time... for example 1 month.

True, and that may be even a better deal. If they never find it, they'll have to send you a new one!

One of the problems I have is that they didn't even confirmed that they received my lens by email. I sent them several emails asking for confirmation, without an answer.

Today I finally called them, and the girl at the other side of the phone finally confirmed that they've received my lens.

This is the reason why I never sent my 50-200 to Oly, despite all the problems I had with it. I knew that I wouldn't see my lens for several weeks (months?), and I don't have another DSLR gear.

Thanks for your suggestions,
L.
