I used to own a 20D and had the original kit lens (18-55). It rarely got used, but some of the shots I got with it were quite OK. I now own the Rebel xsi (great camera by the way) and the newer 18-55 IS. Wow, what a difference between the new IS version and the old kit lens. My copy is VERY sharp, gives good color, and has delivered some near flawless performance. The ONLY reason I would spend more money on a wide angle lens is to get a faster lens (which I haven't needed) or something wider. For my $$ the kit lens has done me an EXCELLENT job.
