XT Metering Mode Rant

I wonder if others have found the metering modes on the XT to be a bit confusing, as I have. I understand what they do, but Canon's order of placement of the modes on the camera as well as the choice of icons is less than intuitive.

EVALUATIVE METERING: Top on the list and represented by a dipiction of the focusing screen with a small icon of an eye in the center. This takes a sampling of the entire screen and meters for the whole picture.

PARTIAL METERING: The middle selection and represented the focus screen with an icon similar to an eye, but not blacked in. 9% of the screen, just the center, is used for metering. Most like a spot meter.

CENTER WEIGHTED METERING: Bottom of the list and represented by a focusing screen with nothing in it. Takes a sampling from the center and then averages for the entire screen.

Well, the icons make no sense. Shouldn't the evaluative be an empty screen, like the center weighted? It uses the whole screen without emphasis on any particular part. Although, in a non-intuitive move and a contradictory step, it uses the center auto-focus point while in manual. The partial weighted, which seems to be the most like a spot meter should be the last choice, shouldn't it. You go from the top which uses the whole screen to the bottom which uses the least. The icon would be more appropriate if it depicted something in the center, like the evaluative icon. Finally, the center weighted is not described well, for it does not describe what exactly it does with the information it takes from the center, and how it relates or averages that with the rest of the screen.

In short, I am constantly baffled by which choice to make in certain situations. Overall constant lighting, the evaualtive is a simple choice. Strong backlit or spotlighted stage subject, the partial seems right. When do you use the Center Weighted? Since getting the Canon G3, which uses a similar metering system, and now the XT, which I think is a great camera, I am baffled by the way Canon has chosen to present its offerings of metering.

Well, the icons make no sense.
Agreed! And there is no text next to them so, if you dont have them memorized yet or have the manual handy...... good luck!

These are icons are incredibly stupid and impossible to remember which is which. What kinds of idiots thought these up?

I always thought Evaluative took the whole screen and metered off of that. Partial takes only whats in the middle and meters that. Center weighted puts more emphasis on the middle, but also meters a bit of the surrounding.

The icon for Evaluative is a blank box, meaning "whole screen." Partial is a box with a circle and a dot inside, placing visual emphasis on "center only." Center weighted is a box with just a circle, which is like the Partial one but not as emphasized.

Makes sense to me.

Oops pardon my retardedness I remembered the icons backwards.

I guess it is confusing!

I completely agree that the icons are not intuitive. Makes you wonder if they ask 'regular' people if these icons make sense or not. Does Canon use the same icons on other models as well or did they just screw up the 350D/XT?

NOPE! Evaluative is the screen with the eye. However, it uses the center focus point on manual. Center weighted is the empty screen. Makes no sense to me

My spouse was a professional photographer and would laugh at me for being confused. So I asked for the run down on which was which...then presented the book. HA- spouse saw it in black and white- it is confusing.

If this was the only camera I had or the only piece of kit with buttons to press maybe it wouldn't be so difficult to remember which is which but it isn't and it ain't.

i agree that the icons are totally un-intuitive. i figured by looking at them that the empty icon would be evaluative blah blah. as most of you. the complete reverse of what is there.....

stil....during my work with my 20D i have found next to no difference between metering modes anyhow. so now i just leave it in evaluative, shoot manual and correct by eye/histogram.

one less setting to worry about.

I made a copy of the page from the manual, and keep it with the camera. I can never remember it!! John E B.

BTW: This is not a pure Canon issue. If I remember right my Minolta Dimage 7i (which now was replaced by the 350D) uses the same stupid, counter-intuitive icons...

I'm so glad to find out that I'm not the only one that can't remember...

We need some kind of mnemonic to remember. You know, similar to the Roy G. Biv thing. Some of you geniuses just need to think one up.

I'm waiting...

LOL.
