X10 not focusing

Only reason I said "was it turned on" (as a joke, yeah) is that you just don't know when somebody is doing something so obviously wrong that nobody helping them would think of that as a possible answer.

To wit: a guy handed me his D7000 downtown once ("can you take our picture?") before I owned a D7000. I was there with another Nikon DSLR. Sure I said.

To make a long frustrating story short, he'd turned off the autofocus switch on the lens so I couldn't get any shots in focus and I know how to use a DSLR. OK, I put the lens back on autofocus. Still wouldn't autofocus. He'd handed me the camera on Auto so I figured it was a no brainer. What the heck now is wrong?

Well, he'd also turned the autofocus switch off on the camera body! Something I would never ever in a million years would think a rookie would do. I couldn't ask him what was he thinking because he didn't speak English.

I feel your frustration because I did have a camera once that wouldn't lock focus no matter what I tried. Its replacement could so it could be a defective X10 you got there.

I know its 11 months later - but if your camera is in "super-macro" mode, it will not turn on the focus assist lamp.

It is easy to accidentally put it in this mode just by handling the camera. I advise locking the 4 way controller and dial by holding down the menu button for a couple of seconds. Unlock it by holding down menu again.
