Hi,

Im new here.. I got my 400d only yesterday, so, please bare with me.

I did a search on what you guys use to view your raw files with. The MS Raw viewer doesnt seem to work with my files - it works with files from my old old old camera (its so old I think its doesnt do much more than vga!) but it doesnt read CR2, so I looked at RawShooter Essentials 2006, all it would say to me was that there were no raw files in the directory, when there were.. Im not going to say Im fool proof, but Ive worked with computers over 22 years, Im as confident as a girl can be, I had pointed it in the right place - after all, I got it to read the other files right?

I guess Im looking for pretty much one thing, I want explorer, when I view thumbnails to show me the picture. I dont mind using the digital photo app canon provided to convert them, but when flicking through trying to find a picture.. Id like to be able to see them - at this moment its whats stopping me from going totally raw..

(PS, I'll be back to ask about lenses... I currently have the EF-S 17-55, but Im wanting a lower Fstop and preferably slightly more length.. and will also be curious for macro if my unmentioned stupid hobby which wants macro photos doesnt turn out good pictures..)

I am newbie myself, quietly sitting in the background trying to learn off the very knowlegable poeple on here

I got software from Canon with my 400d to view the RAW files, shows thimbnails etc. It was just a CD in the box with the body, so has this been left out of yours?

The lens question. Again I know only what I have seen on here so I am sure I will be corrected if wrong. I have just bought a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO for the same reasons you have said (and I could not afford the Canon F2.8 ID lens). Does the all-round job for me, walk around, zoon, macro, fast. I am VERY happy with the results I have in the zoon and macro

No, I think you misunderstand, I have the same software, I see it once I load the software, Im talking about from explorer, where you can set the view to be "thumbnails" without loading up yet more software to scan through multiple directories or do file searches..

Are you sure it's the 17-55? This has a fixed aperture of 2.8, which is, realistically, as low as you will get on a zoom lens.
 
Nope, sorry. Its not that I dont have them or cant get at them, just that I want when viewing files as thumbnails in explorer, to see the thumbnail pictures.

I started using it the edit my XTi's RAW files. Just enough tools for what I need.
 
Yes, sorry, my bad.. should pay attention.. its only a key a way but a good few ££££s :P

I feel your pain, I have the same issue as you and I fuly understand what you're asking. I also tried the raw viewer from MS and it just gives me a could not load or read file type error message in place of the image. I have yet to find a "plug-in" for Explorer to do this.

If I ever come up with soemthing I'll let you know.
 
Thanks. Its sad really something that would be so darn useful, just to be able to be able to press F3, search for a date, and see the photos, or something.. its just a shame nothing seems to work.. if I find one.. I'll let you know too.. If I knew how to read CR2 file format, Id look into writing one..
 
I hear ya. BTW, I heard that Vista has RAW viewing built in, perhaps they wrote it to understand CR2 from an XTi, or it's something that can be patched/updated later. They imply as much with the old viewer as the current version mentions "added support for..." cameras. I'm guessing they won't be updating it anymore w/Vista out.

I'm currently beta-testing v4 and the output is VERY good. Color, clarity,
and detail are excellent. I'm amazed at how well my XT ISO 800 files look,
without any noise reduction applied. Great converter.

I've been using Magne Nilsen's profiles with C1 3.7.4, and find they also
work with the new beta. I think the generic profile is even better than
than the one implemented in prior releases.

If you're using Vista, you'll need the RAW "Codec" for the camera. I downloaded it and can now view RAW files in explorer in Vista.

It's available from the Canon site as a download.

Liz - check out the reply from "3rdday" - it has a quick and easy fix to your concern.

I don't necessarily need it but I downloaded the file and followed the easy instructions on the web page and now Windows Explorer shows a thumbnail picture of my CR2 files - I think that's what you were getting at . . .
