Why is this site 18+ my neighbours who's 17 year old son who just got into photography wanted a site to post his photos I told him about this one he tried to sign up but couldn't because of the age limit. He was pretty ticked when he told me about it.

I don't mean to impose, It's things like this who will drive people away....!

Only DPReview can tell you for sure but here is some informed speculation: There are all sorts of legal consequences to posting content on forums, especially moderated forums like these. When you sign up, you are essentially signing a contract with dpreview by which dpreview attempts to limit its liability. Minors are not bound by contract in most situations. It thus follows that DPReview would decline to allow minors to post.

"He was pretty ticked"? What's the big deal about posting here?

How about directing him to Flikr or another similar site? It seems one of them would be a better choice for his intentions.

I hope he finds it easier to cope with adversity in the future.

At first I'd be pretty annoyed. Then I'd quickly realized it's easy enough to lie about my age.

However, this really isn't the best photo sharing site anyways, I would use something a little more dedicated for photo sharing myself.

Legal stuff never thought of that.....

If he was ticked than I'll assume he hasn't learned yet that the world isn't organized to suit him and no one really cares if he's ticked.

If he's interested in photography, he should consider joining a photo club where he can meet adults interested in photography and learn from them.

You do realize you talking about a 17 year old who owns his own computer business.....?

He is very mature and very smart he got tired of computers and needed a change

It is rather unlikely that this is the reason.
Facebook, Flckr, Twitter, countless others are in the same boat.
I would speculate the owners intention was to avoid silly, childish posts.

I don't think I've ever correctly reported my age for a forum, I usually pick the earliest year they have, as a protest against their requesting such info for little reason. I think one let me use 1492 :)
