Why WOULDN'T I get a Fuji S2 Pro?

D1x is a good quality product from Nikon, but price! also end or
this year, D2 is coming.
If D2 (or whatever) is going to be released this year - in typical Nikon manner it will be announced in June. Photokina in September would be the first occasion to show it to the public, and it would be released in Desember. With a few weeks of traditionally delay it is 2003.
Of course, I'm a typical
fickle consumer, so that could change immediately after I hit
"Post".
If you're the same typical fickle consumer as me, Maybe you share the same priorities as me, and in my mind picture quality is not the first selection criteria. Why? Simply because all of the new DSLR cameras far exceeds my photography skills, and the limit is not the camera, but the man behind it.

Yes, well, my main priority is to have fun :-)

To be able to go out, shoot pictures (I doubt I'll even print 1% of what I shoot - perhaps for some holidayshots), and just enjoy the shooting.

In that case, image quality is important, but not top priority, and as you say: all of the new DSLRs will also exceed my skills (which I hope to improve). Features such as support, expandability, life-time (economical), ... become also important.

D100 & S2 pro is almost same Nikon F80 or N80 body and speed, function, so price will be almost the same too.

So compare D100 & S2 pro color & image quality, of cause I will buy the one which is better.
limit is not the camera, but the man behind it.
I am far a head of the camera, for sure I want to quality as well as price(economical) too.

I never need any support, becuase I will use my camera very carefully, I always buy camera from gary market(direct import from Japan), (no warranty), I still manage to operate all cameras in good manner, then later sell it at a good value, when I need to look for upgrade.

You are right, George, that for a lot of the S2 questions we won't know "for sure" until the darned thing shows up.

I would like to comment on the USB vs. Firewire and which version issue as well as both RAW and JPEG in the camera. I think that people make a bigger deal of both of these than they deserve.

First, the issue of USB vs. Firewire. I used the "old" S1 tethered with USB, and the transfer rate was quite fine. Now, on the other hand, if you have a full 1gb Microdrive and try to transfer it via the camera, well, go to lunch and make sure your camera is on AC power, it is SLOOOOWWWWW :-). Even with Firewire, the cameras are not the fastest guys on the block, which is why I always use a card reader. When I switched from a USB reader to a Firewire reader, WOW, about a 4 times increase in transfer speed.

As to the RAW and JPEG at the same time, I'm not sure why folks find this so wonderful. It is incredibly simple to take a card full of NEF's, for example, and using many of the programs to have them all converted to JPEG as a batch, using the same settings as the camera would have done. When this is done "in camera", two things happen. It is slower and it uses up more space on your card. The only advantage I see is if you intend to take your card right out of the camera and insert it into a kiosk or printer directly.
George, I believe that you are incorrect that both cameras are
"built" by Nikon. At least with the Fuji S1, they bought bodies
Dear Bill

You may be right about how the S2 is made.

I thought that 'maybe' Fuji gave the specs to Nikon-and they made
it for them.

As thing stand at the moment,I suspect that the S2 is very slighty
slightly ahead of the game-but we must wait and see Phil's tests.

BUT there are new things on the horizon.
USB 2 (same speed as todays Firewire) is out now.
FIREWIRE (new firewire coming out SOON at DOUBLE the speed of
todays firewire).

The ubove will most probably be installed in a new generation of
digital cameras in about 6 months time.

Wish list: Just one
I like the idea of being able to do a RAW and JPEG at the same time
in the camera.
I think Canon do that.

Regards

Well, those may be HK USD prices, but eBay says:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1353945630
Used S1 sold at $1300, with feedback.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1353945630
And another at $1575

New S1's sitting at Buy-It-Now of 2200-2400 USD.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1353554539
Used D1, $1680

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1355119710
Used D1, $2195

Looks to me as if:
a) used S1's are available
b) at comparable prices to Nikon D1's.

By the way, let us not forget that when the S1 came out the price was not near what you see now. I purchased mine for $3495 and a year later Fuji drops the price to $2795 INCLUDING a 1GB microdrive. Always happens.

That is more or less typical for electronic equipment; but the current accessories still work with this camera, which still makes it usable.
So what do you think?
Well, situations can be different: Here both the D1 and the S1 are also hard to find, but the D1 due to the relative high demand - although now it is somewhat less, but they are still hard to find as people tend to hold on to them (sentiment ? :-)); the S1 is hard to find as it was not that available here (it was, but not in large quantities, and in fewer stores).

I know for a fact that here in Belgium, it'll be more difficult to find decent support for a Fuji than for a Nikon. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that people here are still somewhat "tied" to brandnames ? More rigid in their purchse behaviour ? I don't know, but I need to take this into consideration. (e.g. Sigma is totally out of the question; I wouldn't even know where to find Sigma-mount lenses)

Apparently, some devices (be it cameras or whatever) sell better in certain regions, and therefore are easier available and easier to find support for. Where I live, the Nikon beats the Fuji; but I'm not saying that this goes everywhere.

VJ,

Nice talking to you via Intenet, we both are locate so far away, and also so much difference in local camera avaribilty.

Here in HK, you can buy any brand, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Sigma, Minotor, Pentax, Contax, Sony, Olympus, etc.

They all has local support, also direct import from Japan (gary market) which support only by shop who sale them.

Both HK local distrubutor or gary market, they don't repair your camera, they will change a new one for you after they check the problem, then send it back to Japan to repair ? (who knows). So 2nd hand digital camera can be very cheap, becuase no warranty, no repair follow up. That is why D1 is so cheap in HK. If you are Nikon Fan, you should come to HK to buy a set of D1, on matter what, after you bring back to your country, no warranty, or pay to your local Nikon to service them.
Now I can not find any support for D1 from Nikon, disscontinuous

Geir,

If you are big Nikon Fan, you should come to HK, becuase here in HK, they are so many brand new D1 still seating inside old camera shop, wait to be buy it. They only cost 1300 HKD, no warranty, no repair, bring it back to your country, you will find support near you.

The sync on the S2 is 1/125 (so far) for dedicated flash units and 1/180 for others and studio flash. The difference is that the D100 defaults to 1/180 when a dedicated flash is attached and turned on. The s2 defaults to 1/125. Other flash units can safely be used at 1/180 as the shuter clears the CCD in time to provide a full image. Nikon was good enough to tweak their own to always default to the highest sync speed althoug the Nikon N80 must be used at 1/125 due to the full frame.

HI Jimes,

i was from HK too. And i know the price ofcamera is really cheap, compare to N. America. That is why i got a F5 from HK years ago. Even I sell my F5 now, as used, i will still can make even. Which is nice.

Now I asked my friend who is traveling for world cup in Japan to get a S2 for me. It will be out in Japan at 21 June, for D100, it will be out at 22 June. Since my friend might be lask of cash, so i may not able to get the camera during her trip.

My question is how much different will be for a HK gray market and offical Fuji S2? I know there is no offical price for S2 yet in HK, but i know it will cost around $1722 USD in Japan (compare to $2400 USD in US, what can i say). Any idea?
thanks

the transponder as well), ... all in a brand new VW in the first
couple of months).
So I'm taking no risks, and thus availability, and support is very
important to me... :-)

Most of HK camera shop already accept pre-order of D100 & S2 pro both. The price are around 18k HKD, both will arrived HK at early July 02.

Gary market will also arrived HK at early July 02, direct from Tokyo, carries by mans.
i was from HK too. And i know the price ofcamera is really cheap,
compare to N. America. That is why i got a F5 from HK years ago.
Even I sell my F5 now, as used, i will still can make even. Which
is nice.

Now I asked my friend who is traveling for world cup in Japan to
get a S2 for me. It will be out in Japan at 21 June, for D100, it
will be out at 22 June. Since my friend might be lask of cash, so i
may not able to get the camera during her trip.

My question is how much different will be for a HK gray market and
offical Fuji S2? I know there is no offical price for S2 yet in HK,
but i know it will cost around $1722 USD in Japan (compare to $2400
USD in US, what can i say). Any idea?
thanks

If you are big Nikon Fan, you should come to HK, becuase here in
HK, they are so many brand new D1 still seating inside old camera
shop, wait to be buy it. They only cost 1300 HKD, no warranty, no
repair, bring it back to your country, you will find support near
you.

But D1x is still very expensive. Becuase they are good.

One question?

If D100, S2 pro & D60 out the street in HK, the price will be
almost very close to Nikon D1H in HK. But still a lot guys will go
for D100, D60, S2 pro .....WHY!

Do they really need so much pixel?
Very simple example;

D1 is out early than S1 pro;

D1 cost almost double price of S1 pro at their brand new status.

Now I can not find any support for D1 from Nikon, disscontinuous
model.

But S1 pro out the shop, still saling at the street. I saw old/new
D1 body price at old or 2nd hand camera shop, there are many for
sale, but no one want it. I ask owner of this shop, can I buy a S1
pro 2nd hand one, the bose said to me, they are too popular, so
difficult to get, hence price are higher, so much well buy a one.

Brand new D1 body only cost less than 1300 USD in HK, still no one
want it. Where S1 pro brand new camera, still saling at 2000 USD
in HK, price will not be drop until S2 pro in the shop.

So what do you think?
well D1 is as you say a discontinued model, but Nikon will repair
it, and they are available 2nd hand and people DO buy them.
S1 is still Fujis only SLR camera, so it should offcourse be
available in the shops. There are no problem finding them second
hand eighter. There are fewer of them, and one reason for that, it
is Fujis only SLR. Wait until S2 hits the street, and 2nd hand S1
will pop up everywhere at prices well below D1. So to conclude: I
disagree with you.

D100 & S2 pro is almost same Nikon F80 or N80 body and speed,
function, so price will be almost the same too.
I agree that they are very similar, yet there are some differences
(flash sync speed, connections, optional accessories - e.g.
portrait grip, size, ...)
So compare D100 & S2 pro color & image quality, of cause I will buy
the one which is better.
Well, each has his own priorities (I'm willing to go for a slightly
lesser image quality if certain aspects of the camera please me
more :-))
I never need any support, becuase I will use my camera very
carefully, I always buy camera from gary market(direct import from
Japan), (no warranty), I still manage to operate all cameras in
good manner, then later sell it at a good value, when I need to
look for upgrade.
I'm very carefull with my equipment, but I always seem to attract
bad badges/series in every hardware I purchase: ranging from
loudspeakers (Quadral), harddrives (2 severe diskcrashes, both
replaced under warranty in 1 year, Western Digital + Quantum), to
my car (engines computer was replaced, as were the transponder
circuit, fuel meter, switch for headlights, keys (had to to with
the transponder as well), ... all in a brand new VW in the first
couple of months).
So I'm taking no risks, and thus availability, and support is very

James, I did extensive testing with the Fuji S1 in both the 3mp and
6mp (interpolated) modes. What I was interested in was if the 6mp
mode really gained anything. Yes, it did resolve more detail than
the 3mp mode. No, it did not resolve any more detail than doing
the same interpolation post-process in Photoshop with Genuine
Fractals or other methods. When compared with a D1X image, the S1
at 6mp mode broke up before the 5.47mp image of the D1X.
Subjectively, it appeared that the S1 6mp image was very similar to
about a 4.5mp image. Better out of the cameras than the 3mp mode?
You bet. As good as a "true" 6mp, nope. I would expect that the
results from the new Super CCD will be about the same. And what, I
ask, is the big deal about doing the interpolation in the camera?
The processor is slower than your PC/MAC and the software to
interpolate is much more limited. You are better served to shoot
in RAW mode and interpolate/adjust later.
On the S1

How do you shoot in 3MP mode in Tiff? I thought it always interpolated tiff images up... and to go lower you were shooting in JPeg.
Geir Atle Ward,

For sure I know 12MP is a SuperCCD result in Software
interpolation, but can D1x or D100 or D60 do the same software
interpolation up to 12MP ?

Even they can, I don't think the result will be nice detail as Fuji
S2 pro.

Don't know, I always shot in JPG with the S1. I never found any difference between in-camera JPG and TIFF.

On the S1 you can choose between shooting in the 6mp mode (interpolated) or shoot in the 3mp mode (not interploated). The menu is between large size or medium size.
