I have both the flattened and the thread view available.

The main problem here has always been trying to sort through a rapidly changing stack of card that have no consistent categorization.

I have forum groups and multiple forums, but then there are those who hate that and want one tall stack of cards that are rapidly being sorted to the bottom.

They need new software, unfortunately the best forum software isn't available at the moment ( http://www.bestbbs.com/ ) it is the fastest forum for the amount of posts that I have come accross.

Ok, he's not. " I " chose to come here and spend hours reading the
posts.
However, why do I have to wait 1 to 15 sec (and sometimes longer)
just to get from one reply to the next? I must be loosing about
50% of my forum time, just waiting for the text to appear before
my eyes.

The way we know it, we click on a thread and then:
1. text appears, we read it: TIME = 5 to 100 seconds
2. we clik "next" or scroll down to see the meaningless titles and
click the next one anyway (how can you chose what to read when all
you can see is "Re: the same unrelated original title") TIME = 1
to 2 seconds
3. we wait for the darned page to appear. Don't get me wrong, I
have a DSL internet access, its the dpreview's servers we wait for.
TIME = 1 to 15 seconds (most of the time)
4. we scroll through the text lazy posters have left in their post:
TIME = 1 to 2 seconds.
5. the proper post appears. we read it and start over from step 2.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!

Can we have a one click post all of the thread, all replies and no
repeated text? Please?
I have a dream: someday, we will all look a twice the number of
front focused cats!!! in half the time we take today!

Would you say you are addicted? Do you consider the hours you spend here are worth the knowledge you gain? (be honest)

I wonder what I could have learnt to make me a better, more successful and happy photographer if I only spent the time that I spent here, reading a specialised photo book and practising what I would have learnt...

Many of us, addicted, don't post, but you know who you are. Do you think a 24 hours read-o-thon on dpreview would forever cures us of the need to come back here and fight our way through posts that are totally useless to us? Sort of like when you are sick after eating something you like and you don't like that food anymore...

After all, it may be good that the forum is so slow. I'm a avid learner, but I have no patience for things that don't behave. The loss of time is what will drive me away. And the loss of time is mainly due to the slowliness of the software. Even if I didn't wait for the page more than 1 sec, it still requires me to open a page before I can decide if reading it as any chance of teaching me something (or making me laugh. That's good enough)
We need dynamically updated flattenned thread, for time's sake.

I'll go breath the fresh air. I think it's raining. Wow, that will be refreshing!

In Mozilla, that keyboard combo makes the new window pop up in back. So you can merrily click every post in one sitting, then go about reading. With IE, each new window pops up in front, so you have to mouse over and click to get the first window back on top before you can click the next link.

saver in my opinion.

I agree.......it gets really boring and slow to navigate a particular topic. I've run popular 2000+ user BBS's in the past and flattened with 15 posts per page was always the best compromise.

Don't blame Phil, blame your ISP. The site is pretty fast to me (never more than 1 to 2 secs between pages).

Ok, I have something like 6 gigabits of bandwidth at hand (I work for an ISP) but only 100 to my desktop though. Also, living in Belgium, I probably use the site a a time where most of you guys are sleeping or getting frunk in bars.

But anyway, the server is not slow.

There's only two things you really need to fix anything, Duct Tape and WD-40. If it's supposed to move and it doesn't, use WD-40. If it moves and it's not supposed to, use Duct Tape.

How much have you paid for this service? Ummm...nothing? I guess
it's easy to criticize when you're not footing the bills. Yes, it
would be nice to have lightning fast response and different forum
software, but let's keep in mind that this is a free service.

Is that sort of like watching the telly and only paying for the box?

Personally, I would love to see DPReview move to phpBB (it has forum FAQ's... "sticky" threads for important announcements... moderators... polls... among other things. And it is open-source!)

opera users think htey really save time using opera, its a pretty marignal time saving (split part of a second, 1/8 sec at most), that you save compared to the bottleneck of a lagged server or conenction...

I guess the biggest peaks are when the americans have tehir spare time for surfing dpreview and lag the server... btw. the server is even situated in the USA virginia to be exact... but ill tell you what, you buy phil a dedicated server or two more in the USA and im sure he will use it... they go as cheap as 150 - 200 per month a piece

In IE, while holding down the SHIFT key with your little finger, click the mouse to open the link in a new window. Forget the CTRL key, it's not needed in IE. Then hold the Alt key with your thumb while hitting the tabulator key with your middle finger. Then release the keys. That will switch back to the previous window. Think about how you arrange your fingers on your left hand, it will save you from using the right hand on the keyboard. Keep in mind that this method won't work for people using the mouse with their left hand.

That's a lot of serious mouse button and keyboard gymnastics to do over and over quickly for every post in a thread. It's a lot easier to just hold down ctrl-shift and click click click click click.

Dunno why people are so obsessed with finding a way to make IE "as good as" Mozilla when it comes to this. Just accept it that Mozilla does this better. I use both Mozilla and IE for this site. Mozilla is better for reading the threads, IE handles the scripting and pictures better.
