why is borderless so hard?

I've been looking for a high quality photo printer to print 8x10 borderless. They all seem to do 4x6 borderless but not 8x10. What is the technical limitation here? Does anyone know why 8x10 borderless is so hard to do?

Umm the Epsons have been doing borderless for what a year or two. Look into the Epsons Stylus Photo 785EPX and above they can do upto a borderless 8.5x11.

I am doing borderless printing on my Epson 2100 up to A3 size (11.7 x 16.50

and if I had any reason to do so I could buy A3 + paper and still print borderless.

Good question. I am having problems with my Epson 785epx, in that it cannot print a borderless 5x7 image on 7x10 card stock.

The printer is only designed for specific borderless widths, such as 4", 5", 8" and 8.5", but not 7", so you can print borderless on 5x7 size cards but not on 7x10, and the 8x10 setting doesn't work for 7x10 without getting ink all over the inside of the printer and contaminating subsequent pages.

To answer your question of why it's so hard, it's because for the printer to do borderless it has to have both its hardware and software printer driver designed to work together for that purpose. For example, in the Epsons, there are open areas in the plastic paper support guide below where the print head moves over the paper which contain a foam sponge material to soak up extra ink that sprays over the edge of the paper when doing borderless. Those sponge areas are only built at certain positions. Also, I believe the driver has to adjust the image size to be slightly larger than the borderless paper size for those specific sizes and also uses a special borderless printing mode to deliver a more limited ink spray near the edges such as at the end of a print and maybe at the sides too. I don't know why they couldn't have designed the printer to accomodate all custom widths and paper sizes for borderless printing.

Tuna Boy, in case all of these posts haven't helped, I'm simplify the answer: Canon doesn't have an 8x10 borderless setting because they don't sell 8x10 paper. Epson printers have an 8x10 borderless setting because they do sell 8x10 paper. Someone else will have to tell you what HP does, because I haven't studied their printers.

the answer: Canon doesn't have an 8x10 borderless setting because
they don't sell 8x10 paper. Epson printers have an 8x10 borderless
setting because they do sell 8x10 paper. Someone else will have to
tell you what HP does, because I haven't studied their printers.

This is frustrating to many, it does seem odd that a printer in the upper
price ranges wouldn't have a driver for whatever the customer wants, lol,
oops, that's right they don't cater to us do they. Canon makes two or
three different 4x6 papers but yet they aren't listed in sizes, if it's there
I haven't found it, so sometimes my prints are on the fold instead of centered.
