Why I'm returning my NEX

I said would not will as I have no information. Sony announced 3 lenses from 16 to 200mm plus 2 wide converters at launch which is more than either Oly or Panny.
That may be true, but it still doesn't help this guy. You can't say keep the camera because Sony might announce a lens this fall that may come out next year, and until then be unhappy.

I would say get something that you can use now and re-evaluate next year if new lenses do come out.

btw, there are about 20+ lenses that auto-focus and are compatible with the the G2 and G10 as well as the Oly m43 cameras.

My advice for now is get something that will make you happy today...not next year...if you want to wait for next year, return what you have now and wait.

The NEX doesn't meet my needs for 2 reasons - I can't use a camera without a VF, and I don't care for a 16mm lens.
Hey, me too.
If I bought the NEX5 and then complained that there was no fast stabilized 24mm or 35mm lens and complained that Sony still hadn't released the add on EVF or a firmware patch that added wireless flash control, I could expect a lot of strange looks - what ever gave me the impression that Sony was going to have such accessories? I know I don't understand why people make purchases under those circumstances.

Maybe people telling them, "this camera is awesome, you have to get one!"? :)

It is a little unfair to someone stepping up from a P&S to buy a camera and a lens now, and then find out the only other lens on the horizon will retail for $800+. I am sure the super-zoom will be useful, but it will also be expensive and very large.

The only other choice is the not very fast wide-angle you mentioned. Also, these people will NOT want to manually focus.

To be fair, for those with a DSLR, the above is not so true. There are tons of great legacy lenses in every shape and size...it's just that EVF thing that gets me...I am waiting for that possible NEX 7 that may come out next year.

You could have said the exact same thing on the Panasonic Forum almost two years ago. The lenses came out in this order 14-45, 45-200 both slow zooms $800+ super zoom (optimized for video like the Sony) then the 7-14 arrived at $1000 in the spring of 2009. Finally, about a year after the G1 launch the 20mm finally is released with the GF1.

The Oly launched nearly 9 months after Panasonic with a slow kit zoom and the 17mm lens which if you go back in time did not get great reviews.... The next Oly lens came this summer one year later with the 9-18 and then then the 14-150 (which isn't cheap).

To be fair, review the history of M4/3 before casting too many stones.

I never said anything about keeping the camera. All I said is that you will either get more or no clarity very soon. I fully support the fact that you should not buy a camera on the future. If the current incarnation does not support what you need, don't buy it and wait.

Kits may vary in USA/Europe. If no caps are added, buy a set of lens/body caps for $9.99 incl. shipping from Hongkong.

Why a roadmap? For ME 10 lens (NOW!) are enough for my NEX.

I'm waiting for a Konica-NEX adapter, then I have a NEX + 20 lenses. That's enough.

Some people waited for NEX13 and NEX15, grew old and got a loooooong beard!
Look mirror ... for YOUR beard!

Some people believe RAW is the top of this world.

A goooood camera and a gooood Photographer do not need RAW - go out and make fantastic JPGs ... IF YOU CAN! Or let it be.

I think every make will have some big announcement. My bet is there will be a lot of happy people around here waiting so spend money...like me. :)

I don't think more people are annoyed that he even bought the camera in the first place since everything here is pretty much common knowledge.

Sony clearly targeted this at p&s users and says so. The UI is probably the most talked about con for advanced users. Sony has announced the lenses that will be available (keep in mind that it has only been out a few weeks now) and the specs are well known. But this guy goes and buys one any way and complains that it is intended for p&s users, that there are no high end lenses available and he is not waiting, no raw for video, and no caps. No caps might be the only surprise and that is hardly a reason to return (or keep a camera). This is like buying a shirt to wear it and returning it the next week because you noticed that it didn't have extra buttons and oh by the way, it wasn't my size, my color, or my style.

I'd like to make a better analogy here, but all I came up with is:

No, it is like buying an interchangeable lens camera system, and wondering how you'll protect the rear element of your lens when you remove it from the body.

Honestly, I can't see why Sony would purposely leave these out. Maybe not a deal breaker, but a very odd and annoying decision (or mistake).

I don't think that is a fair analogy. Very few people buy shirts because of the extra buttons. However, people do buy interchangeable lens cameras to use more than one lens. So if he bought the NEX 16mm kit Or the NEX zoom kit and had a fast 3rd party lens he wanted to adapt. What would he do with the e-mount lens when he had the other lens on the camera? I suppose he could cover the back of the lens with duct tape or stick in in a zip lock bag, but people usualy want the rear element and electrical contacts protected.

Likewise, he said that he wants to be able to separate the lens from the body and carry each in a different pocket, not an unreasonable desire with the world's smallest interchangeable lens APS-C camera. It would be nice to keep pocket lint out of the camera and keys from scratching the rear element. And what do you do with the duct tape when you take it off the camera (its really sticky)?

Also up until a couple of days ago, people were reporting how sony didn't have a stock of these caps available for separate sale. Now they do, so no more need to use duct tape.

Leaving the caps out of the kit probably kept Sony from going bankrupt or charging another couple of bucks per kit so someone probably got an award for that suggestion, but it really seems cheap (or maybe P&S upgraders wouldn't know what to do with them???)

And definitely make sure they have no option (on a $2k camera).

I always find shopping for Sony products fun. Companies used to have product lines that were stripped at the bottom and added features and capabilities as you went up in price. If you wanted everything look near the top of the line.

Well that's not an adventure. So Sony adds features as they go up in price and removes others. They usually make sure that some of the features they remove are ones that someone would want when they move to that level.

So that way you get to think a lot more about what you have to compromise. It used to be the compromise was money for features. Now its money and an expected feature for other features. And of course if you don't like the trade off its your fault because you just don't understand that the company knows what's best for you.

Notice I stayed out of this one.

Because he started out by saying he likes it...can you believe the nerve? No wonder some are so upset.
I believe all the ops need is to drink less coffee... so his hands can be more steady and less shaky

there.... problem solved :P

seriously.... why all these bash because of 1 return camera?
