First, I really like the camera but since Sony so clearly is targeting the NEX to previous p/s owners I don't expect them to release faster lenses in portrait to normal range anytime soon.

Sure I can use an adapter but then I don't have any stabilization when I want to shoot movies. I tried to use a monopod but the result was still very shaky and the small size is pretty useless if you have to bring something like a tripod.

There is some things I don't like with the camera but they are things that I can live with. The most annoying thing is that you don't get a body or rear lens cap!!! The small body size is pretty useless again when you can't remove the 18-55 lens without any caps and make the combination pocketable.

Great potential with the system but I have no idea if I have to wait two or three years for some usefull lenses. So where is the lens roadmap and is Sony still working with the AF with the adapter or is that completely off?

I'm not sure Sony is marketing the camera "clearly" to P&S users - what can you point out that shows Sony is doing this? And if they are, they are not succeeding very well from the looks of this forum... it is clear that the camera is appealing to experienced photographers with many selling off their DSLR systems in favor of the NEX. It also seems that a ton of people on this forum already have some very expensive older glass and are putting it to good use on the NEX body. P&S users do not have old Leica glass laying around. In fact I'm not sure I've seen more than one or 2 P&S people on here discussing the camera. Most seem like seasoned photographers. The reason for people selling their DSLR's and bothering to put up with the few inconveniences of manual lenses is because the NEX sensor is probably THE best one out there right now - and certainly for the money. It is smoother and less noisy than my Canon 7D using my whole bag of $1000+ L glass lenses and it is obviously a fraction of the size.

Lastly, to return a camera because you don't immediately have a huge arsenal of glass to throw in your bag or because a cap isn't included (they can be bought, mine just came from Sony) is really shooting yourself in the foot. You will not find this quality of image in anything less than the very top, top end of the Canon and Nikon lines (DSLR, full frame). Instead of worrying about the minutia, GO OUT AND START TAKING SOME PICTURES with the kit zoom lens - it's a fantastic lens and you do not need more than this to give you some great images especially at high ISO.

In 1975 I bought my first SLR camera, a Canon FTBn with a 50mm 1.8 lens on it and I took amazing pictures, exhibited them, sold them, did private sittings as well as yearbook photography in high school WITH THAT ONE LENS and NO FLASH because I could't afford more equipment. It was all I had through 1985. It forced me to make-do and become a better photographer. And using manual lenses now will also give us all a tune up if we so choose to fool with them, making us less lazy since AF and long zooms has become the usual. Being forced to think - or walk a few steps is good for us all!

where did you find prove that many sold of their DSLR gear ?

I'm actually selling of many of my lenses and getting M mounts in return to start building a more compact system based on the NEX. A camera roadtrip for me now means a 15-20kg backpack. I'm not a pro, just like technology and taking pictures. The NEX is a first gen camera, so there will certainly be improvements in the pipe-line.

If a body with more SLR-like features/controls came out, I may actually think of selling my D700 (though it will cause me some consideration). I am actually hoping Sony, Nikon or Canon will come out with such a body next month. I really like the small size and the availability of good compact lenses in M format. I would sacrifice AF for that luxury (in my eyes, YMMV), or just get a kit lens like I did with the sony. Who knows... I just want to point out that if I am thinking about it, there are bound to be people who have already taken that step.

Size does matter ;)

With that dumbed down Menu and putting size before function.

I think they are but they also got some DSLR users as a bonus.

Yes I agree, if you only are focusing on taking pictures.
P&S users do not have old Leica glass laying around.
No, but I don't think it is the Leica owners Sony was caring about when they sacrificed a button for“Shoot Tips” and the “Help Guides”.
Lastly, to return a camera because you don't immediately have a huge arsenal of glass to throw in your bag or because a cap isn't included (they can be bought, mine just came from Sony) is really shooting yourself in the foot.
I don't need lots of glass, just one usefull lens. Ordering caps will take weeks to get and by then there will be other alternatives to the NEX.
it's a fantastic lens and you do not need more than this to give you some great images especially at high ISO.
Yes you can get great images with that but not the images I want.

I would be very happy with a NEX lens like that.

Couldn't you have figured that out before you bought it?
I'm a steady shooter so I thought I didn't need stabilization for video. That was wrong.

Both Panasonic and Olympus released lens roadmaps for their new µ4/3 system, so I thought Sony also would do that. That was wrong.

I thougth it was obvious for all manufacturers to supply a body cap to a body. That was wrong.

Now I'm a bit wiser.

You can get the caps, don't see the problem.

New lenses are coming, there's even talk of Zeiss E-mounts.

Roadmaps are nice. But still: no lenses in the store yet for them either.

u4/3 has been going for a while, NEX just came out, what do you expect?

You're basing everything on two crappy plastic caps????

If you want it for video, why in god's name get a NEX3/5? They have the VG10 for that.

50/1.8 lens: Get an adapter and you can use that very same lens, and many others. They even have lens caps for it.

Maybe you should focus on taking pictures instead of worrying about lens caps and the help functions (RTFM) ?

I think it is wise to return a camera that does not live up to your expactations. Just go for the camera that suit you best, that's why there are so many cameras.

For me the Nex is great, good menu (not great, but good), good kit lens (again not great but good for a kit lens). The possability to use other lenses with an adapter, just great. Great handling, great functions (like HDR, pano etc). Tastes do differ. Have fun finding your new camera!

No, but that small body advantage is wasted without the caps.

I want someting for both pictures AND video. NEX3/5 has unnecessary crippled video mode and VG10 unnecessary crippled picture mode (no RAW).
50/1.8 lens: Get an adapter and you can use that very same lens, and many others. They even have lens caps for it.
I have adapters and good lenses but they are not very usefull without stabilization and if I get some stabilization for video I don't need that tiny body.

I never buy a car without Coke holder! That's no car.

my SONY with caps ... delivered. If not included ... go to dealer and moan/grumble/rant.

Best for you is a pencil + one sheet of paper ... PAINT your pictures & videos !!!!

Why is the camera a waste because it has no caps? They will not fit in your pocket either way so you will need a small camera bag anyway. it will protect your equipment. but again, you can get the caps but you do not want to wait to get them.

The video is not crippled on the NEX5, and the stills on the VG10 are not either. One is a photo camera takes also makes video, one is a video camera that also takes photos.

What you really want is a P&S or a hybrid, not a system camera.

The body in one pocket and the lens in the other would easily fit.

Are you kidding? Sony removed features only because of marketing decisions. There's no technical reasons for removing basic features like manual video modes and RAW capture. It's a good start but I have my DSLRs for now and can wait for a NEX7/9 or a GH2.
