Why does Microsoft hate me?

W10 and 11 are so lame i can't even choose the way i want my files and folders displayed, by default they are displayed as a list, whereas i want them displayed as medium sized icons. I make the switch, but every time i reboot the display method reverts back to list.
I agree with all your points and run Manjaro Xfce on several of my systems. But my desktop is still bound to Windows but a number of applications that are not available on Linux.

However, I did want to echo your point about viewing files and folders.

On Windows 10 at least, the file open dialog seems to use a random selection of view type. Sometimes it starts with a list view, other times an icon view. And frequently, when I process a batch of files in the same folder sequentially it changes view half way through.

My preference is for a list view and I wish I could set that once and make it stick. Anyone know how to do that?
Directory Opus , a fantastic replacement for File Explorer.

Oh, I never use File Explorer per se. I have my own File Manager. I wrote it myself so it does exactly what I want and nothing more :-)

But other applications (e.g. Firefox) use the standard Windows File Open/Save/Save As dialogs which are a part of File Explorer. Hence it's pretty much impossible to avoid some of its annoyances.

..edge still is picked to display PDFs.
Most common file types have default viewers in Windows, and I guess Edge is the program that is capable of displaying them that Microsoft picked as the default viewer for PDF files.

But it's easily changed. When I installed Acrobat it became the default viewer.
At least for a while. Unfortunately, Microsoft (and other application vendors) sneakily change my settings from time to time.

It's quite annoying. I have sometimes wondered if I could lock the appropriate branches of the registry, or export them to a .reg file so I can whack 'em back.

Has anyone figured out exactly which branches need to be saved?

There might be some useful info in this link:

No but I found this: If you want to save and later restore your file associations...

Dism.exe /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:C:\FileAssn.xml

Dism.exe /Online /Import-DefaultAppAssociations:C:\FileAssn.xml

Nice!

Edge doing the job doesn't bother me. Somewhat handy for the PDFs to be there, versus the 100 Chrome tabs.

This is the second thread I have seen today by this "**** Dasterdly" and he opens the thread and then fails to respond. He also joined DPR quite recently.

The other thread of his I saw was very odd (about how you buy your cameras), but this thread is so obviously wrong, I call troll.

I was considerably amused when I first saw this forum name. Way back when, people could join "**** Dastardly's Vulture Squadron" for a pittance, and I did for grins. I was even more amused when a guy down the hall put a "Vulture Squadron" sticker on his apartment door.

But it still results in a flood of comments. Complaining is the new norm.
"Meet the new norm. Same as the old norm." :-)
