Why does Chrome not support HIF images?

Worst thing about WebP is that it's not good for HDR. Adobe's gainmap demo has AVIF, JpegXL, and JPEG. The first two seem more promising than WebP.
That could be the case, for WebP you may be hitting it's limitations. JpegXL is supposed to be the successor for WebP isn't it or just another option?
Possibly JpegXL will win in the long run. It seems more committee-oriented than AVIF, and not patent encumbered like HEIC/HIF.

However if you want to enjoy XDR-1600 and HDR-1600 monitors, Apple ecosystem with HEIC in Photos app is the only (?) alternative to Lightroom HDR mode. Although I read that the new Pixel cellphone can produce gainmap HDR.
My host provides it as part of the hosting package, it renews automatically through them, so there is no maintenance going that route.
Is it possible a lot of your management and website maintenance you're personally involved in is the result of your hosting company or the hosting plan you have?
What I do is with Wordpress, website built with Elementor and hosted with SiteGround.
Is it Wordpress.com or another provider? Thanks much!

Unfortunately, we've got a bunch of different graphical file formats competing to supplant JPEG. There's JPEG 2000, there's HEIF, there's WebP, there's AVIF, there's JPEG XL. Any one of these could be a great improvement over JPEG. All of them fighting each other is not so great.

JPEG XL appears to have great specs, but I saw that Google have dropped support for it.

At this moment AVIF seems to be well supported in web browsers.

HEIF is backed by Apple and can be output by some cameras (Fujifilm comes to mind).

Did they ever support it? Currently, Google Chrome does not display JpegXL images without a plug-in. Is this a change?

Yes, Google Chrome can display AVIF (with gainmap!).

All the major full-frame and APS-C vendors support HIF in their latest models. Looks to me like they made the wrong decision, but as Yogi Berra said, "it's tough to make predictions, especially about the future."
