Hi,
I wanted to just poll the community on any "inexpensive lenses" (
i.e. such as the 50mm 1.8
i.e. the Tokina 24mm-200mm
etc.

I'm thinking about buying the Tokina, but wanted to know if anyone else had any other luck with descent "inexpensive" lenses (mostly third party).

Thanks,
Dan

the kit isn't exactly unuseable but to be honest I don't carry it any more since I got my Sigma 24-70mm f3.5-5.6. For $120 it is well worth the money. The only thing I miss is the slightly wider view from the kit.

Dan,

I've had very good luck with the Tamron 70-300mm 4-5.6 LD Macro(model 572). Check it out.

the 50mm 1.8 definately.

also using the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 ($299 after rebate). Fast, Sharp lens, which has been compared to the Cannon 24-70L F2.8.

I have (and like):
Canon 50 f/1.8
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 Super Macro II

Since the limit is
Canon 50 f/1.4 (better build than the 1.8 & some say better bokeh)
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 (little wider than the Tamron w/ similar performance)
Canon 85 f/1.8 (fast focusing, sharp)

All depends on what you want / need.

Sigma 18-128 DC to replace the kit lens for the extra reach. Better than the kit lens.

Sigma 55-200 DC. A good performer at the low price and light.

Canon 50 1.8. Nobody should be without it.

These are what I take on holiday with the 300D.

I also use a Cosina 19-35 (I think it is badged Vivitar in the US) either on a film body or on the 300D when I'm shooting sessions using a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 with my 20D. I've had the Cosina for years and it's a much overlooked/maligned lens.

Just recently purchased the 50mm 1.8 ($70 new) and the 28mm 2.8 ($129 used) and I really like them both.

I use the Tokina 24-200 as my outdoor walk-around lens and have been pretty pleased with it. Image quality is good up to about 150mm, softer (but still usable) beyond that. I was in the market for the Canon 28-105 3.5-4.5 (another good, cheap lens) but opted for the greater range of the Tokina (with a rebate they were the same price). If you’re concerned about weight you don’t want the Tokina – it’s built like a tank but is very heavy.

I have used the Tokina for most of the shots in these galleries:

I also have the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super, the best inexpensive long lens (IMHO).

Then you define inexpensive differently than I would.
But I am using:
1. kit lens (actually rarely use it any more)

2. Sigma 18-125 (completely replaces the kit lens; range is perfect for my needs)
3. 50mm f1.8 (no-brainer: cheap, fast, sharp)

4. Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4. This is my low light wide zoom lens. Sharp, fast, good AF. But I actually consider this an expensive lens. It costs about what I would think is a reasonable price for a whole camera (with lens).

Still learning to use the DRebel (only around 10.500 shots)
Public pictures at http://wwwis.win.tue.nl/~debra/photos/

Fun lens (although it is manual focus) for about $100.

I also use the kit lens and Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I might upgrade to the Tamron 17-35 (or 17-40L) to replace the kit - I ahve to decide.

The 50 1.8 takes the prize though.

I might consider the 70-200 f4L as an inexpensive lens (compared to the other Ls). Problem is I tried the 70-200 f2.8L and now want to upgrade to that!

Canon 18-55 kit around f8 or so.
Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX Macro.
Tamron 28-75 Xr Di.
Sigma 15mm f2.8 FE.

The only lens I have that cost more than $400 is my 70-200f4L. (And it is very nice.)
