Which Image Browser software is best?

The batch options are many, and it has both resizing and stretching, and in each you choose the X & Y, or just one and ration. What I'm saying is you probably did something wrong because I did some of those resize batch for the same reasons, and the pics are great.

i tried again, resized the same photo from 1600x1200 down to 1024x768 on both irfanview and windows, compared them with the forward / backward button and the irfanview version is definatley more pixelated, here's what i did:

1) opened batch conversion and selected the photo
2) in Option, set jpg quality to be best

3) in Set Advance Options, "Set long side to: 1024" (i had multiple files of different sizes), "Preserve aspect ratio"
4) OK and Start

the result is pixelated pictures

i'm using irfanview 3.97 btw

Since you saw an advantage switching from ACDSee to InfanView, I decided to look into it. Couldn't find that InfanView has a Data Base/Boolean Search capability, the main feature I use ACDSee for. Did I miss it?

I am using the same version and I can't see that pixalation you mention. Why don't you send me the original by mail, and I will try to downsize it and see if the results are different? I have the same IrfanView installed. I installed all the plugins as well, maybe it makes a difference...

Yeah, ACDSee is the best. But it is not free.

The user interface is very configurable - it's hands down the faster image browser - I love it. I also like the very configurable way it will transfer images off the memory card.

what sold me on ACDsee is it's SO MUCH FASTER at displaying and editing images than any other tool I've used.

I have ACDsee 7 - didn't upgrade to 8 since I couldn't see anything new that would interest me.

If you resize photos individually make sure you select:

"Resample (better quality)"
"Resample filter Lanczos filter"

I am guessing you have it on "Resize faster"

In batch mode use the option

"Use resample function (better quality)

I'm sold on it. Can't compare to others because once I got used to (learned) ACDSee, I never felt the need to go back. Well worth the money spent. Same goes for the companion printing program Foto Slate.

Now I'm printing albums for Christmas gifts using the programs. With ACDSee, I've boiled down from 3000+ images from a tour to China and organized them into 2-volume albums of 576 images (96 pages with 6 images each page) each. It was a snap using the data base features and the flexible album printing capabilities. Been doing it while watching football this fall, because the operation is so intuitive once you figure it out.

Gotcha, but my reply was to apxmtb who seems to have not stuck with ACDsee.

But one question while I gotcha - ACDsee 7 is REALLY slow and limited dealing with 20D raw files - any solutions?

Well, I have never used these features, and I don't know what they are... sorry. I just liked the speed of IrfanView and the more detailed EXIF data, which also rotates the picture on the fly for you.

I guess you need to check the resample box - it helps the quality. If this doesn't help, then please mail me a screenshot of your advanced options from the batch dialog, and I'll try to help you there...

I agree that acdsee has become very slow. I don't know what they are doing, they try to make acdsee like photoshop with all those image editing tools. I have acdsee version 8 but i don't use it because all i need is to view pictures. For editing i have PS CS2. So I use acdsee v2.41. It's a lot faster than anything else, it needs 100ms to start on my athlon 2500.

You can make ACDsee startup faster by disabling plug-ins you don't need.

Good that you shared your experience that ACDSee8 has become slow. I was contemplating upgrading to it. I did download a trial ver. 8, but didn't use it much because I didn't find anything on it that I use that my ACDSee 7 didn't have. ACDSee7 sufficiently fast searching through 1000's of JPegs on my machines. I too mostly use PS also for editing because that's what I learned early. PS is linked to ACDSee so it is easy to go from viewing/finding in ACDSee to editing in PS and vise versa.
