What is the Poor man's DOF Preview solution (Understanding Exposure text)

The NEX cameras will actually show the 'live view' which shows DOF preview on the screen. Simple test to understand this: Set the camera to A Aperture Priority mode. Assuming you have the 18-55mm kit lens, find something to focus on that is close to you, but where you can still see the background - something linear would be best - like a fence or something that extends far into the distance. Set the aperture 'wide open' at F3.5. Look at the screen...you will see out-of-focus areas, or blur, on the screen which you would expect from a wide open view. Now, adjust the aperture to F11. Notice on the screen how the background areas which were previously out of focus are now very much in focus, and the focus area is significantly wider.

If you engage the 'focus peaking' mode, you will also notice how the area being indicated as 'in focus' by peaking highlights will also significantly expand as the aperture is stopped down.

That was exactly what I was thinking about when figuring out how dSLRs are different from the manual ones where we couldn't accomodate for those factors.

Very helpful. I had questions about those but I think the forum will probably cover them. I'm also going for a short weekend refresher and hopefully that'll help to clear things up as well. Thanks!
