I've said this in a couple of other threads, but I can't get over how much everyone has helped in the last month or so with my D60 purchase and the amount I've learned is unbelievable just because of this forum and the contributors to it. In fact, by reading everyone's posts I feel like I know you all. :) With that in mind, I was sitting around reading the forum today and wondered what in the heck everyone does with their time other than photography. I mean, I know it consumes a lot of time and money and energy from us all but for most I imagine it is just a hobby. I was curious what everyone here does for a living.

I'll start. I'm a Technology Specialist for Microsoft. Basically, other companies call this position systems engineer. I do technical presales for enterprises looking for solutions based on our platform. With that in mind, if anyone ever has any issues, problems, recommendations regarding our software feel free to let me know. I'd be happy to help as much as I can and give feedback to the appropriate groups within MS.

So, that's it for me...what does everyone else do? I'd love to know what takes up the other half of your time other than photography and L lens obsession like me. :)

I spend my "work" time trying to avoid a lot of Microsoft problems. I am a Sr. Technical Analyst for a large Houston based utility company (not Enron, but maybe just as bad.) I am a Novel CNE & CDE, and I spend a lot of time explaining how much of the Microsoft advertising our execs see is either hype, comparing apples to oranges, or just flat lies.

I acknowledge that Microsoft is responsible for making the PC industry able to put a PC in every home. I also acknowledge that Microsoft is a monopoly that either swallows or crushes any competition, thus guaranteeing that the PC in every home will be controlled by Microsoft.

I also like photography. That is why I come to this forum. To get away from all that other stuff.
 
Had a job as an automotive executive for one of the Big 3 companies. Retired a year and a half ago at age 50 (had 32 years service at that time), landing with a golden parachute and a pension check exceeding that of most workerbees. I spend virtually all my time with photography. If I'm not actually taking photographs, I'm studying photography, practicing Photoshop techniques, retouching images, surfing the Web on photography forums like this one, or doing something else involving the discipline. I've had several local offers to do some professional photography work (I was flattered) but gracefully fended them off. I had a job once and don't need or want another. I love photography and firmly believe that the love would quickly fade if money was involved (other than the thousands I spend on equipment, of course). Such is my life - and it's wonderful. Oh - I do get saddled with an occasional household chore or family obligation (I have a wife) - but I keep those things down to a manageable level (HA!).

I would say I am a software engineer, but here in Texas you have to have a PE to use the term engineer in your title, so...

I am a software guy working on handheld devices for education at Texas Instruments. I am on the team developing and defining what our next generation of educational products will look like.

Been at it 22 years.

My work has appeared in House and Garden, Rolling Stone, Architectural Digest and many other publications world-wide. Specializing in people and interiors.

Have a U.S. patent for a unique lighting modifier of my own invention that mimicks the properties of sunlight, and I design, produce and photograph the content for a web site that I'm trying to turn into a media presence in Toronto.

i own several staffing firms and pieces of several other businesses. during the times when the businesses are being well-managed by the staffs, i get time to go do product shoots (for other people) and some fun photo work. my wife and i do a lot of photo work for a local nature center, sell some 'landscape' and street photos, and putz around. i'd spend more money on photo stuff, but have a son in college (can't wait 'til he grads!). just moved from a fuji 6900z to a D-60 (what a difference).

this forum has helped me in some decisions (the D-60) and some lenses (have a 'L' on order) and tons of other stuff over the last year plus.

the 'side' photo work we have done has more than paid for 2 fjui's, the D-60, a computer upgrade and many lenses...thanks to help from people on dpreview. (now to choose between breeze and yarc!)
