what computer do I need?

My old PC , well, it's replacement time.
Why can't you just upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11,it's free?

Ian
Hi Ian. Believe me, I tried. In fact I did indeed upgrade to Windows 11, taking advantage of the offer from Microsoft that was sent to me in my email folder. And then things got strange.

For several months everything worked as it should, although I couldn't really see any performance advantage with 11 over 10. But then Windows 11 told me I had to perform various functions in order to access my desktop, and I couldn't find a way to resolve the problem. I took my computer to Best Buy's Geek Squad, and they tried to address the issue, but couldn't. Exploring the problem in depth, they realized that for me to get Windows 11 to properly function, I would need to buy an updated motherboard and a much better graphics card, although the one I was using was really quite powerful already.

The Geek Squad agent I was working with was also on the development team with Microsoft for Windows 11. He apologized for what I went through, telling me that the email I'd received was not authorized for release to the public. It was a beta copy, and was anything but stable. Nevertheless, because my motherboard was not designed for Windows 11, I would never get the upgrade to work perfectly. Windows 11 would work when it was perfected, and I could download it into my system from Microsoft, but it would have issues. I decided to go back to Windows 10.

BB did not try to sell me parts or a new computer. They recommended that I use my current model for maybe another couple of years with Windows 10, and after that buy from DELL the best Windows 11 desktop I could for the type of work I do. Best Buy could not sell me a DELL desktop that was powerful enough for what I wanted to do.

I paid BB something like $140 to return my computer back to Windows 10. What else could I do, lacking the expertise to do the job myself? After that everything was fine, at least until the latest photo development/enhancement programs came out. And so I won't have the performance and speed I want, but I've decided to bite the bullet and in 2024 buy a new Windows 11 DELL desktop with a lot of power.

And then hope it can keep up for at least two years.
If you could be so kind as to post what motherboard, CPU, and graphics card you have, that could answer many questions.

$140 to revert the machine to 10, presumably wiping out everything in the process? Not a great deal.
