I just bought the 300D and the sigma 18-125 lens. Because money is tied, I cann't afford an eTTL flash. I am wondering if I can use the Vivitar slave flash DF200 (or other slave flash from Sunpak, etc...) in combination with the built in flash of the 300D? Any slave flash is independent from the trigger voltage of the 300D?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I just returned a DF200 that I bought as a slave to go with my 550 and 420. I couldn't get it so sync regularly with the other flashes and I found it to be poorly constructed. My first flash that I used with my 300D was a Vivitar 285HV. Its an excellent auto flash for slightly more than the DF200. Newer models are safe to use with the 300D but older models have high trigger voltage (at the hot shoe) that could damage your camera.

My 285HV had a trigger voltage of 6 volts which should be in the safe range for use with your 300D.

I measured mine using a voltmeter making connection to the center pin and the metal clip on the side of the shoe. My guess is that a two year old flash has safe trigger voltage. That was about when I bought mine. Try a search for trigger voltage and 285HV across all forums and see what you find. There was a lot of activity in the Olympus forum when I bought mine.
