Utter Nonsense ...

And where the business are, the merchant goes ... simple as that .. and while Seattle is not exactly Silicone Valley, its at least close enough ....
Silicone Valley is in LA, right? Being close to there should enhance DPR's assets.
Yes, Silicone Valley is in LA with all the breast implants there, but why would that enhance DPR's assets? :0

Silicon Valley is in the Santa Clara Valley, just south of San Francisco, which is even closer to Seattle. ;)

No...Silicone Valley is actually in Texas, not L.A., but I forget whether it's Dallas or Houston that's the fake capital of the world.

Silicone Valley is the area between the Silicone Mountains and they are found everywhere

As I stated in an earlier thread, which dpreview chose to delete....for whatever reason, but including the obviously politically correct one:

I think the reason for their moving from London to Seattle is - High Taxes and the English economy. Almost the worst in Europe, besides Greece.

The growing Muslim presence. What Islam couldn't do by conquest in the past, they are accomplishing now by immigration.

The prediction by many that England will be like a 3rd world country in 10 years.

All of which has nothing to do with cameras etc. I admit. But, dpreview IS about cameras, and it is a smart move on their part!

Welcome to the USA. Glad to have you!

what a load of rubish :)
there are six times as many muslims in the USA than there are in the UK

our taxes are lower than most of Europe (still too high)

our economy is still the 6th largest (by GDP) in the world

anyone who thinks The UK will be a third world country in ten years time is either stupid or verry stupid

DPR does not sell tangible goods. They can locate anywhere on earth and do the same job they do now. It has absolutely nothing to do with big markets or big bull$h1t such as this drivel. What you are running off at the mouth over would make sense if they were selling a product and shipping it. Use some uncommon sense and think before you babble on. They sell advertising space on the internet and they get a good buck because they attract a lot of people. I suppose many tune in to laugh at the cr@p that flows so liberally here and the more that tune in the better DPR's ad revenue. Number of viewers equals revenue. Simple. End of story.

I imagine that dpreview will be more able to leverage the resources, knowledge and skills of Amazon employees when they are in the same time zone. I suspect that they'll be much closer than just in the same metropolitan area. Could be good for them.

No one asked dpreview to give reasons for their move ... but the ones given are utter non-sense and some what insulting.

Quote: "This is an exciting move for dpreview.com, and will give us access to considerably better resources and allow us to expand our content and add features, tools and improvements to sections of the site that we know our users will love".

As much as I like Seattle it does not have "considerably better resources" than London.

"expand our content and add features, tools and improvements to sections" ... this is an internet site and content features and tools could be added from outer Mongolia ! never mind poor ole London.

I am not looking for an explanation ... but if you are going to give one ... try to make it more credible !

And usually there is a Canon Europe or a Nikon Europe over the regional divisions... so what? Let's be honest, the relocation has nothing to do with the size of the market but only with Amazon. And there's nothing bad with it, but let's be clear, US is not the most important market.
Ah. Then which market is the most important?

Warning!
Silicone Valleys are known as a typical habitat for Cougars . . .
Just speculating, but if silicone valleys are the areas between silicone mountains, isn't it the cougars' prey that is found there, not the cougars (or at least, not all of the cougars)?

Ah. Then which market is the most important?
http://www.cipa.jp/english/data/pdf/d_201003.pdf

Actually Jan-Mar figures tell us that Europe (not EMEA) comes first and Asia second for interchangeable lenses camera, while on compact cameras the Americas (not only US) comes first followed by Europe...

Keep in mind that while production still grow at similar rate, shipments of interchangeable lenses camera are much higher as for total pcs and even higher on value, so i let you figure which segment is more important to manufacturers nowaday...

By the way, in any forecast the most important market will be Asia (China) so if a move has to be made to follow an important market, that should be to Asia, not to USA, hence why I state that the relocation has only to deal with Amazon and not with the market.

How about the beer is cold?
uh - there's a reason North American beer is served cold. Because it is crap. It tastes horrible at any temperature other than cold. Taste it warm - it's horrid. European beer doesn't have to be chilled in order to prevent the drinker from wanting to spit it out.
And NO I don't live in Europe.

No, you live in Toronto, and you apparently haven't a clue about beer. Please stop embarrassing yourself, read a little bit about lagers, pilsners, ales, and for Pete's sake, stop buying "beer" at your local 7-11.

I know of at least nine local breweries in Seattle. You do have those in Toronto, right? Local breweries? Look them up.

It will just get better once Dino Rossi becomes the next Senator of WA state.
The one thing we have here in Seattle are lots and lots of software developers. Many of them are unemployed at the moment and willing to work relatively cheap.

You have to understand that in the software industry, the term "resource" refers to a human being who develops software. Once in awhile it means equipment too, but for the most part they are referring to the human element. Having dpreview close to papa Amazon gives the parent much more control and allows resource sharing.

I feel bad for anyone who had to leave family and friends and move to the other side of the pond in order to stay employed during this wretched financial crises. On the bright side, Seattle is a decent place to live and there are many interesting and beautiful areas close by.
