The G95 offers four custom modes, numbered from C1 to C4. But, the mode dial only offers the option to select C1 or C2, along with PSAM and the rest. So what about C3 and C4? Well, C2 is actually C2, C3, or C4 on the G95 and you have to dive into the menu to select which custom mode C2 will actually be activated when you set the mode dial to C2.

I have C1 and C2 setup to quickly switch between standard color and basic mono which has worked really well for how I shoot and I would like to use C3 and C4 as well. Has anybody set up their G95 to quickly switch between C2, C3, or C4 without all of the menu diving? Unless I missed it, I did not see any option for changing between C2, C3, or C4 by using one of the Fn buttons.

I would think this works like most other Lumix models, and you should be able to tap the shooting mode in the top left corner of the screen and select the C* option you want.

For example if C2 is set to aperture priority the top left corner should display “A” in a red box and above it should be “C2”, and tapping that should bring up a prompt to change to one of the extra C slots.

Just to add to the helpful posts above (which I didn't know was possible), when you have the camera mode dial set to C2, pressing the Menu button also displays the custom mode selection screen on the camera so you can easily select C3 or C4.

Exactly. Use the touch screen to quickly switch between them.

My G9s are the same way (except with three C modes on the dial) & I use the touch screen all the time to choose between C3-1, C3-2 & C3-3.

Thanks Pete, I knew I probably missed something right in front of my face. As soon as I set the mode dial to C1 or C2, a C sub-menu comes up as soon as I hit Menu, is labeled C2-1, C2-2, and C2-3 and lets me select between them.

I see that this does work exactly as you describe, but I keep touch screen turned off because I'm a left-eye dominant shooter and usually hit the touch screen with my nose, either moving or activating something at the wrong moment. But thanks for this great tip.

It also remembers tour C2-1/2/3 choice until you change it again, so if for example you select C2-3 then whenever you select C2 on the dial you'll get C2-3 immediately.

You turn the LCD backward is to avoid nose focusing?

If so, you don't need to go too extreme. Just disable the Touch PAD AF, and also the Touch AF too if for whatever reason you find focus will move out of your wish. No more nose focusing.

As the two Touch AFs are independent setting, you can keep Touch LCD in active (for the 15 controls on Q.Menu, 5 soft fn keys on Tab Menu operation, plus certain specific controls with certain feature, e.g. one time AF for MF mode, also to select the other 2 C modes etc). If you turn the LCD backward or disable the entire Touch LCD, you would lose a lot of quick controls.

If you would use Touch AF, e.g. on tripod , you might assign Direct Focus Area to a fn key. When you need to use Touch AF, hit the DFA, the focus will turn into an one time resizable/movable status. You might touch on LCD to set focus. After finished the shot, hit DFA & DISP to return the focus to the center. A solution on using ad hoc Touch AF without nose focusing annoyance.

Indeed I would like to say the C modes on G95 (same as other Panny in similar setup?), should be C1, C2-1, C2-2 and C2-3. Hence you could know the C3 & C4 are actually part of the C2.

On my G95, I had Touch Pad AF is disabled but Touch AF cannot be disabled. Can just choose between Touch AF or Touch AF+AE. In my attempts to use the Touch Controls for the soft Fn buttons only, no matter what else I set, Touch AF is still active and my nose can still do stuff. Strangely, when I had my GM5s, the touch screen was divided into 3 sections and the main Touch AF section could be disabled while the Soft Fn buttons and a strip on the top still worked to change settings. Of course that was perfect for me and other left eye dominant shooters, so the Panasonic designers couldn't wait to change it.

Left eye dominant shooter here too. On occasion, I have been known to use my nose to move the focus point so I don't have to alter my grip on the camera or move my left eye far from the EVF.

Bet that took a lot of practice :-D

Interesting. I do not own a G95 but it is not like that on my other Pannys which supporting Touch AF/ouch PAD AF (GX7/GX85/G85 and the GX850 which support Touch AF only since it does not have an evf).

As per the manual of G95 & G85, I suspect they should be the same on this(?):

On my G85, my two Touch AF settings are as below:

The "Touch AF" sub Menu has 3 options: AF, AF+AE & OFF:

Select OFF can disable Touch AF
Select OFF can disable Touch AF

I wish G95 should not be a step back on this feature taking away the OFF option (it was there since the first Touch AF supported Panny AFAIK).

What is the options of your G95?

Touch Screen: On/Off

Touch Tab: On/Off

Touch AF: AF/AF+AE

Touch Pad AF: Offset6/Offset7/Off

It seems Panny has taken away the OFF for Touch AF.

Thanks God, when I was looking for an upgrade of GX7, I was originally eyeing on G95 because my wife had the 16Mp GX85, I would perfer a 20Mp and Live Composite should be interesting to have.

Before I made my decision, saw an incredible discount on G85, which costed me 1/2 of the price of G95 at that time. Ended up with a G85.

I am not aware of that change. I would regret it since I would never test the camera to that depth before paying for it. In my area, I can only return/exchange a faulty product!

I think it's the same on the GX9 Albert. I no longer have mine so I can't check but I seem to remember you can turn it off in the "fly out" tab on the touchscreen but not in the menu. Don't rely on my memory though (I certainly don't!).

Edit: And the G100. It looks like it might apply to any Panasonic with the "new" menu system. And I can turn it off using the tab on my G100.

Just about any of the major retailers in the US, Japan, or Hong Kong will sell you gear with the option to return it, usually within 30 days but some only two weeks, if you are unhappy for any reason. As for me, I buy most of my gear used if I can find a mint condition copy for a reasonable price. I bought my G95 used for less than half the price of a new one. Except for a small scratch on the flash hump, my G95 looks brand new and everything seems to work ok, at least what I use.

I spent a good portion of my career as a design and later a product manager and I can tell you designers can't ever leave anything alone. It's like they need to change stuff just to justify their existence, along with the fact that almost none of them ever use anything they design out in the real world. Plus, while the Japanese do an excellent job with hardware, their software design skills are among the worst. In addition, all of the camera makers have some type of ambassador program where they take feedback from a handful of people telling what the paying customers want.

I use the Operation Lock feature for exactly this reason. Set it to some convenient Fn button (the one in the top rear dial for me). It disables all touch operation so my nose doesn't go rogue with the touch controls and by now I turn it off or on without thinking.
